Takeing Corky's post below one step further, What are the chances of contamination or problems from hooking up to un-known impelments? Used from dealer/auction etc or a neighbors? Have never thought of it befor but his post brought it to mind.

Hydraulic contamination is the "S&xually Tranasmitted Disease" of tractors! The more machinery you hook up to the more chance you have of problems. Its not just water that could be in the fluids , but fine metal cuttings that your filter will plug up with, dirt and even insects. My neighbour had an older tractor that didn't have a hydraulic filter system. I hooked up to his dump wagon and promptly plugged up my hydraulic filter, lost steering and three point lift function. That was the last time I hooked up to any of his stuff. There were pieces of chaff, dead flies, all kinds of unrecognizable materials in my filter..fluid contamination is a real possibility..... .Mike in Exeter Ontario

I don't think different oils cause too much trouble. We rented an IH last fall to run a bagger but it ended up on the chopper instead, where our Oliver 1855 had been. It did end up taking a litle of the MF Perma-Tran III we run into it's own IH hy/trans stuff, and we did the same when we hooked our 1855 back onto the chopper in the spring.

Never noticed any difference, and I really don't think that a few quarts of the "other" oil would do much harm.

If on the other hand, if the last guy to use it doesn't clean his connections or use dust plugs, yeah there's gonna be a little dirt in the system. It should be filtered out by the tractor's filter, but some of it goes into the cylinder before it'll go back to the tractor to get filtered.

Hmmmmm,

They always make me supply my own cylinders at my own additional cost.

Falls right in line with my "buy high and sell low" policy. :>(

I usually try to purge hyd components before interconnection into my system.

pressurize then drain, pressurize then drain again.. etc.

If you own a Ford, JD, IH & Cash what do you do?

Too much time to constantly drain the system. Over time they all end up mixed.

My guess is that they all end up with what is most convienant/least expensive.

My day ran dextron in his gear tractors for years with no problems or abnormal wear. i'm talking 25 years +.

I'm not up on the new big ones but my Kubota Dealer recomended HyTran over the Kubota fluid for my new little Hydro Kubota.

I've run Cub Cadet Hydros on Hytran and Dextron and couldn't tell the difference a decade later.

I do like hytran better because of the water retension properties.

It might make sense to do the drain thing once if you don't know where the implement was used. Gear Oil / dirt / water would be a bad things to get in your trans.

Mixing Hy Guard and Hy Tran - I don't think it matters all that much

If i knew an implement had some sort of UTF in it ( NH 134d, Hytran, Hygaurd 303.. UDT. etc.. ) I wouldn't worry about it. if I thought it had hyd oil, or gear oil in it.. I'd purge as much as i could before connecting to my system. If the oil in the implement was water laden and emulsified.. I'd purge it 100% before interconnection.

All my hy implements use UTF.. however if i had any that ran on the ford N.. then I'd keep them seperate.. Ford N has 90wt in the common sump..

Me personally.. I'd also avoid ATF in my common sump machines. i don't see any final drives that spec ATF.. there must be a reason for that.

Well there is another thing I know nothing about, How do you pressurize and drain with out hooking to the tractor system? I bought a plow from a fellow with the cylinder and hoses. Ask what he used in it and he said its out of the tractor. I said what do you put in the tractors, oh, just watever is on sale you know. I pulled the hoses and drained everything I could but did not pressurize and drain. How?? Bob

Prety easy to remove hose ends and drain hoses and blow out with air. Small cyls will cycle with air.. large ones i use a hi-lift farm jack to open and expel oil on the extend stroke of the da cyl.. etc... and also compress with the jack for the other side. Then you can refil the cyl's using the tractor remotes and a process of purging air.. etc.
