Ok all you Ford Diesel experts, neighbor girl has a 1980 Ford D truck. She was coming home from school. Truck ran out of power, won't idle too long. If you give it fuel, increases RPMs slowly and then feels like it is either running out of fuel or lack of air. She had fuel filter changed around 500 mole ago.

I am at a complete lose on this one. As what I know about Truck diesels engines would not even fill a nimble and that would run out!! :>(

Also has an excess amount of white diesel exhaust. seems way more than normal... Thanks

I want to thank everyone for your quick response to this problem.

Ok, young girl is beyond school age, she was returning home from a one week Carpentor Apprentice class in Portland,OR.

I will check out suggestion given on her truck tommorrow and post results as I find them. Again thanks everyone.

Still feel as dumb as a box of rocks..:>((

As long as you know she didn't put gas in it then Bob , who posted below has the correct answer. I know you don't want to hear it , but that crumbled up governor retainer ring will be your problem.

Everyone else is tending toward the fuel side of things and white smoke generally does indicate a problem with unburned fuel. The one thing nobody else mentioned, and I may be off base if it isn't turbo charged, is that a siezed turbo will cause the same problems. If the bearings were gone out then it would typically smoke black and use oil, but not all turbo problems are that drastic. Knowing that the truck is being driven by a younger, school age, girl I know most are always in a hurry. So taking the time to let the engine idle down before shutting it off is probably the last thing on her mind. That being said the turbo would definately be a place to start looking if it is in fact a turboed engine. Too, if the turbo has a wastegated, the same problem can occur if the waste gate is stuck open. In either case, siezed or open waste gate the injection pump is supplying a normal amount of fuel throughout the RPM range but there simply isn't enough air present to burn all of it, hense the white smoke. Good luck.

Are you working with a 6.9 liter V-8 diesel?

If so they came out in about 1983.

If the IP still has the original plastic governor damper ring, the problems she is having are classic symptoms of a failed plastic ring that has gotten brittle, broken up into what looks like coffee grounds, and has plugged the housing pressure regulator/fuel return fitting at the top of the IP. When no fuel can be returned to the tank, the IP ceases injecting fuel, and the engine shuts down. Timing advance is affected, causing smoke before the engine shuts down.

You can remove the fuel return hose, then unscrew the complete fitting out of the IP, and look for black plastic chunks in the valve/fitting. If you clean them out, it will run again, for a while. However, continuing to run it without rebuilding the IP will result in governor parts that are supposed to be cushioned by the plastic ring banging around metal-to-metal, once the ring completely breaks up.

Keith, How many miles since the injection pump was rebuilt? My 1986 6.9 needs to be rebuilt between 85 to 95 thousand miles. It has 430 some thousand on it now. Your problem sounds alot like an injection pump rebuild.

Keith,

I dunno, but it sure sounds like the injector pump up and went south to me.

Start off easy make sure it has enough fuel in the tank(s). I can't let my 88 Diesel get much below a 1/4 in either tank. Fill each tank to at least a 1/4. From there work your way through the fuel system.
Water seperator check for fuel in the filter -- bleed it and drain water. Crack the injectors to bleed them as well. If its not running better already. (You'll have the air filter off at this point so check that as well.)

Above based on obvious of checking coolant and engine oil.
Post back when you get it figured out.

This problem is due to a tank selection switch/valve(from what I've been told by others having same problem). Air gets into the system. A fix at this point in the age of the vehicle would wind up with new fuel lines to both tanks. Not in the mood will do though next time I replace brake lines.

Symptoms are hard starting, won't stay running, blows smoke all kinds of colors. Bring tanks to halfway mark all is well.

On my 83 diesel had a strainer mounted on the drivers side firewall. Gave me nothing but trouble. Bypassed it. HTH Everett

WHITE SMOKE CAN MEAN SUCKING AIR:HOLE IN FUEL LINE,LEAKING FILTER GASKET IF ON SUCTION SIDE.COULD ALSO BE VERY RESTICTED FUEL FILTER.

OK Mark, how may fuel filters on this truck, actually it is a 1983 6.9 D? I have only found one, which is right on the engine.

My repair manual only shows the one on engine. But I do not have manual for older Ford truck, Mine is 86 to 90.

ok, lemme say i am NOT a diesel expert, but any white exhaust from an engine indicates WATER in the combustion chamber. possibly a leaking head gasket or maybe a cracked cylinder that is seeping water. that would explain the severe loss in power. pull the oil dipstick and look at the color. a grayish sludgey color and it is water in the oil.

Hay, not water in the fuel or exhaust. Definitely diesel fuel smoke. Oil looks good other than being black, no indication of any water in either oil or exhaust. Thanks

Keith:

I had a problem with my 93 F250 with 7.3 Turbo Diesel in it a few weeks ago. What happened with mine was that it got to where it was very hard to start, it took cranking for about 15-20 seconds to get it to start. It just seemed like it was sucking air. After about a week it develeped a fuel leak, and then a baaaad fule leak. I went through a couple of things before I found my problem. I replaced fuel filter and lift pump, neither one helped. The problem turned out to be the caps, return lines and Orings on top of the injectors. There is a kit that NAPA can get (I can't remeber the kit name) that gets you new orings (2 per injector) caps, and new return lines for about $35-$40. OK long preexplanation there. What caused my leak, of air and fuel, according to the pump shop was the new low sulphur fuel. The pump shop said that the new low sulphur fuel doesn't have some of the aromatics that the higher sulphur fuel has therefore the orings shrink and get brittle, and then it dumps fuel and sucks air. Then the engine has a hard time running. Lesson learned from the repair. Do one side of the engine at a time, and do all 4 on that side. Get the truck running and look for leaks. Now do the other side, this makes it a lot easier to get the truck running. I don't know if your neighbor girls problem is related, but apparently the problem I had is getting to be very common with the older (pre 2000) trucks.

Rob
