Well finally got the stupid crown gear out of my 1965 case backhoe. You know just a few simple design changes and that gear could just pop right out of there, but no make it stupid.Anyhow the machine shop is going to weld it and then machine it.That should work for awhile.New seals for the brakes, new brake shoes.Any tricks to setting up the gears and bearings, everything was a big loose mess.I know there are shims in there but some of them were tofu(fubar).

I didn't see any cracks.I think after 40 years the shims for the bearings and gears just wore out.The large shims for the carrier I believe set the bearings, there are about 8 shims per side,if I take half out that should tighten up the bearings.

Mike,
Did you inspect the Brake Plate/Differential Bearing Carrier to see if it is broken or cracked. My was. I'm told this is a common problem and that new aftermarkets are made beefier.
