just do the right thing and get checked in reply to old, 11-22-2006 09:23:58
We just buried my Aunt a couple of weeks ago. And that was after getting checked for the past 20 years. She had one suddenly grow fast and nasty between checkups and it was too late. That cancer has killed both Grandmothers and two aunts. Polyps have been removed from other aunts, uncles, cousins both parents and both siblings. For reasons unknown but I’m thankful for. I’m the only perfect *sshole in the extended family??? Some claim an aspirin a day over an extended period of time tends to reduce the number of polyps. Maybe I shouldn’t complain about that shoulder injury that has had myself take an aspirin a day for the past 25 years??? A blessing in disguise? I'm too chicken and squeamish. So I went for an Electron Beam Tomography instead. Just lay on the table without getting six feet of converted shop tooling rammed up your hind parts. It checked everything form heart cholesterol deposits, lung tumors, liver, pancreas, spleen, kidneys, bladder, intestines both large and small on the inside the outside. I've seen the same type of inspection tool used to look inside jet engines and nuclear reactor components. Then again when the wife had me neutered, I was chicken and went for the general as well. Wake me up when it's over.

Had one done years ago by an old timey dr. that was using me as his test subject for his first time use. He turned the lights way down and began shining the instrument light around the room to check his focus etc. He greased it up and shoved it in talking to me and the attending nurse as he viewed the colon and other areas up to my throat it seemed like. There I was pants down to my knees a cute nurse standing back there helping him while I looked at a blank wall. He finally asked how I was doing up there and all I could think of was the embarassing situation I was in. I just answered that I was OK but every time I opened my mouth there was a light on the wall. The nurse went into hysterics and he got a little mad. He told her to straighten out that this was not a time for levity. Until he retired I would go in and Lori would start to laugh when she would see me in the waiting room, then we both would be laughing but no mention was ever made of the light on the wall again.

I've had 3 and I'm only 44 but I've got some problems... I read all your replies and would agree.. I'd highly recommend you ask for the pill form to "cleanse" your system.. The gallon is "NASTY", I couldn't get it down... I've had 3 different doctors with 3 different experiances. 2 wanted me to watch it on a video screen.. I was drunk once when I was a kid and that's the closest thing I could compare it to, and I didn't really want to watch the sreen. The last Dr., I told him I'd rather just not remember and that "WAS NICE". Highly recommend asking for the good stuff and wake up wondering when they're going to do it! Katie Curic made it out to be some sort of fun... A cable in a man's wazoo is not fun... Hope all turns out good for ya and Hope you have a great Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas !

Old...Sounds a lot worse than it really is. I've had two done, was awake both times, and it's no big deal. Don't make it worse by fretting about it. The second time, my wife, who's an RN, was in the room. The doc holds up the scope eyepiece and says, "Susie, come take a look at how nice and pink this intestine is." That was a treat, having my wife look "at me" like never before. But you feel great when you get a clean bill of health. And if there's a problem, you catch it early when it can be fixed.

So don't worry about it. You'll probably find you've had more discomfort scraping your knuckles or bashing a thumb, which you've done many times, working on your tractors.

Good luck and Happy Thanksgiving! David

I had one done about 3 years ago at age 49. My father did'nt find his colon cancer until it was to late. I have a family history of colon cancer so I plan on getting one as soon as insurance will pay for another. The procedure is not as bad as the prepration for it. Next time I'm going another route than that gallon of golightly they want you to drink. They put me out for the procedure, so I did'nt know anything until it was over. I would definately advise to get one.

One of those saved my fathers life. He did have colon cancer and they took out about a foot, but no chemo and no spred. I had one about 7 yrs ago. The prep is the worst part, you literally stay on the pot for an hour or two. the procedure is nothing because you're out. I know one thing, though, that knock out medicine is great stuff. I can see how people can get hooked on it. I never felt more happy and relaxed as I did before I conked out.

Old, it aint too bad, and like everybody is telling you it sure beats the bad alternative.
Anyway, you will have an excellent chance to catch up on your magazines in the reading room during the night before!
And you will have some peace of mind knowing how you are.

The prep isn't much fun, but I'd be happy to buy a bottle of that stuff they gave me before the procedure. Had the best nap I've had in a long time. I tried to get them to give me a batch of it in pill form, but they said "sorry 'bout that..it don't come that way".

Git R Done!! My family has history of colon cancer, baby brother had 3 ft. of his colon removed when he was 23.

I get this done annually now just to be sure. Get the Fleet Phospho Soda (2 of them) and some Dulcolax laxitives (overnight). Both can be had at local pharmacy. Doc asked me if I wanted to watch, twilight or lights out.

I told him I did not even want to know he had been there. Same story for past 5 yrs. now and I am clean. They have found polyps on my Sis.

Like I told others of the family it because of the family lineage His aka Dad (me), Hers aka Mom(my brother) and theirs (the two of them) (Sis and baby brother).

What to do, the day before your "prep" day have only liquids and your "prep" day will be A LOT easier. The worse part is drinking that crap. Make sure you get the Total exam and not just the short one. Had the short one and wasn't Knocked out, it felt like my insides were going to explode. Was knocked out for the long one, it was a piece of cake.

Now listen up Old --- I went to the VA and they told me to have one done, and said I was getting that gallon of "go lightly" I said --- NO WAY DOC. I don't like that stuff, I want what's called "Fleet" and he said, the VA don't have that stuff, and I said (We'll see) the Nurse called and I told her I don't want and can't take the Gallon stuff, and she said, no problem, go pick up the "Fleet" and I'll send you instructions. (( I said, that Doc Don't know what he's talking about )) when I went to have the procedure, they wanted me to use the I-V pain killer, I said, NO WAY, I don't want it, and they said fine, let's go.. I went through the procedure good, at the 4 bends, I had some pain, but nothing I can't handle, the Doc said, I was a REAL Trooper, and was a Very Rare Fellow. so there you have it OLD, (the Procedure took 45 minutes) you can do what you think best, but that's my story, and if you want any more information, Just let me know....

Oh joy! Had one done back in April. They are no sweat! The gallon of "Like a Goose" juice tastes awfull , but the no food deal is not that good either. I would say get Campbles chicken soup and remove the noodles. You will be {no solids} for 24 hours. Wait till you get the needle to knock you out! They don't even tell you to count backwards anymore. Looks like a little travel size sample of toothpaste. Squeeze it in and you get to say "oh I guess it is ..... ...". Starting to work don't get there. You wake up about 20 minutes latter with a snap. You can get up in about three minutes! The best for last. WAIT TILL THEY SHOW YOU THE PHOTOS. Inside of your appendix- first turn in your bowel- and the best of all is the inside of your as- hole!!! Have fun and hope there is no trouble. They are VERY thorough. PS you get to Far-t a lot!

Old, as everyone says, have it done. My wife has had the procedure twice, due to colon cancer in her family. First time several years ago she had to drink about two or three gals of the nasty stuff along with laxatives. She hatede it.

Second time , about a year ago she had to take a small amount of lxative but none of the nasty stuff. She had to drink only clear juice for 24 hrs. If I were you, I wold ask about the clear juice method. Just my thoughts. Have fun.

Ray,
Get one scheduled now. This is not something you want to find out should have been done. I and my wife had them earlier this year. I had a polyp removed, and so did she. They called later and said the one she had was the type that turned into cancer. It is really a simple procedure, and there is no pain or discomfort other than the prep.

As the others allude the most difficult part not eating for 24 hours and dosing up laxative – it’s gawd awful tasting stuff! My wife however suggested tossing into the back of your throat then immediately chasing it with a few ounces of ginger ale – can hardly taste it then.

The exam itself is easy and painless. And the exams DO save lives! I have several friends and relatives who’ve had problems detected early and eliminated of as a result of colonoscopies.

I agree with everything below. The main thing, for you and everybody else, GET IT DONE. I had no symtoms or family history and got it done only because my doc retired and the new one recommended it. And...they found cancer cells on a polyp. They took it off 3 years ago, been back 3 times and no sign of any cancer.

the "cleansing" the night before is the worst part, test itself is piece of cake

don't skimp on the cleanser, when I had my test 2 people skimped and the doc couldn't see to do the test, they had to re-schedule

old-time cleanser is real salty stuff in bottle, neither flavor tastes good, just a different super salty taste

wife got Rx for some cleansing powder, tasted fairly good compared to the salt, worked a lot gentler but still cleaned like that old white tornado

It wasnt so bad and I didnt have the seditive, no way I was wasting a whole day off work. Yeah right, next time Im letting them put me out but it wasnt so bad. Beats the alternative.

Old, No problemmmmm mm I had one about a month ago but they found a small non cancerous fatty tumor (may have plugged me a lil a couple times) and s few diverticuli so had a laprosopic sigmoid colectomy 2 weeks ago n they cut out about 12 inches of the bad colon areas. I seem fine now n lost 15 punds cuz before n after the surgery I didnt eat nuttin but freakin jello n popsicles for 5 days

The colonoscopy is not painful but I HATED the taste of the two Fleets laxatives the day before YUKKKKK KKKKK KKK GAG a MAGGOT ewwwww wwwww lol and youre pretty well on the poddy the whole night before

My neighbor took some sort of laxative pills instead of that nastyyyyy yyyyy Fleets by mouth but the wife nursie said it wasnt as good as the Fleets liquid I had to drink YUKKKKK KKKKK

But its definitely worth it for early colon cancer detection sooooo oo u gotta bite the bullitt n just go do it. A buddy never had one and they found colon cancer which had spread to his liver n told him had the had a colonoscopy earlier they coukld have found it n only had to cut a lil out and he likely would have been fineeeee

Youre a big boy Old, go get er done

I had one done a couple of years ago. It's not so bad, unless you wake up in the middle of it, like I did. Then, it's very unpleasent. The doc might offer to let you watch it on the monitor. Pass on that, tell him to just make sure you don't wake up early. The aftereffects are nothing. You wake up a little goofy. My wife said I asked the same questions about a half dozen times apiece. And you will have some extra fart gas to get rid of, from all the gas the Doc ballooned your colon, so he could get a good look, with. Jack

The bad part is the prep work, i.e. enema, The scope itself is not that bad. Don't plan on doing anything else that day, it takes most of the day to get your wheels back under you.

On the positive side, many lives have been saved by the early detection of colon cancer and related problems.

Old, after losing a brother and 3 first cousins to colon cancer the Dr recommended a colonoscopy every 2 years. I went in to have it done at Kalamazoo,Mi hospital and it was a very painless test. They give you a injection and you drift off to sleep, and when you wake up it is all over with no memory of it at all. The worst part was having to ride home with my wife driving because they wont let you drive or operate machinery for the rest of the day. The whole test takes about 2 hours.

Prep part isn't nice. Don't worry about the ride home, you'll be quite peaceful. You may also be fairly easy to carry on a conversation with for a few hours. In other words "STONED".

Old. I forgot to tell you that they give you a cocktail to drink the night before. Worst part of test.

Old

Here is a link to what happens during the procedure.
Never had the pleasure, so I don't envy you.

They will give you a nice sedative before going in, which makes you feel all warm and fuzzy. With the sedative, the procedure is only slightly embarassing, but otherwise painless.

You get a 4oz bottle of some salty stuff to take the night before...you drink half...4 hours later your gut rumbles and you fall in love with your toilet for the rest of the evening..every 1-15 minutes...you get to sleep pretty good that night with no toilet episodes..next morning you get to drink the rest of the nasty stuff and you fall in love with the toilet all over again. You have nothing left in you other than water so you wonder why you need to clean out anymore.

You get to go to the hospital and you just know that you'll crap yourself before you get there but ...you don't. You get into the area and they get you to take your clothes off and then they insert a IV into the back of your hand. They then wheel you into the colonoscopy room and the nurse make idle chit chat. What you don't know is that she's slipping you a mickey into the IV.

Your lights go out. No tunnel, no bright light, no heavenly voices, no nothing. You're dead.

Next thing you hear is "Wake up" You wake up and say "When do we start?" They say "You're done".

The doctor wanders in and says "We cut out ___polyps, see me in 3 years" or "you're all clear, see me in 8 years" and then he hands you a 4 picture composite of your nasty looking colon...then he says "oh, by the way, you have roids, wanna have me tie them off?"

Then you have to fart/pass gas as they loaded up your colon with gas to expand it. When the nurse asks if you passed gas and you say yes, you get to go home.

Oh, the doctor may comment how beautifully you prepared your colon for the visit of the tube. The tube is about 1/2" thick, somewhat flexible and the last 3-6" of it is articulated. It has a light, a camera and a place to put tiny roto router tools in it.

That's it....well....not quite...the preparation is nothing like you've ever imagined...no diarrhea compares to it, but, you get to do that in the privacy of your own privy with your wife laughing at you.
