Diesel. Lost power, blew black smoke, then just DIED! Bad Rings, er Valve /Head Prollums?????

Start with the easiest stuff first. Blocked intake? Clogged/collapsed air filter? Something get sucked in (shop rag, paper towel)? Engine shutdown choke valve come loose or cable to it slipped?

Very Low compression. Didn't actually check it, but you can turn the motor over easily by hand. She's a '81. (Or thereabouts) That's why I suspect stuck/bad/out of adjustment valves or worn rings. The air filter intake was clear.
