Since I have had so much time on my hands lately, I've been thinking of creative ways to spend money and perhaps get my hands greasy at the same time. One thing I have been thinking is about getting a "starter" tractor for my children. My oldest daughter is 13 and my oldest son is 11. Both have good heads on their shoulders and can be trusted around machinery. Additionally, they have both been after me to teach them how to drive a tractor. I've let both of them take a spin on the D17 in the field (with me right with them just in case). I also have a Ford 5000, but I really couldn't be on the tractor while they drove it, so neither has driven it as yet.

I know there are some major opinions on this site about children and tractors. I'm not reckless in my own life, and I'm even less reckless with my children's lives, so there is no reason for soap boxes.

Additionally, I personally am partial to Allis or perhaps Ford tractors.

That being said, what are some good tractor models on which a young person could learn? What characteristics for such a tractor would you choose? Additionally, what kind of tractor work would be appropriate for a young person? I've already thought of raking hay next summer. What work would really be out of line for a teenager?

Anyway, as I said, it is a rainy, muddy day here and I got the chores done early. Nothing to do but think about next year.

Christopher

Chris I like the idea of the ford n series
tractors. And best of all the ones with the
floorboards [ like the 8N ]. I started out
with the ford 9N at about 9 years old and
it worked out very good. At the present time
my 10 year old has started doing basic chores
with a case IH 585. He can safely operate the
pedals and there are seatbelts and good solid
ROPS on it. If your kids are like mine they
are growing up around alot of machinery. The most important thing I can say (in my opinion)
is to spend alot of time with them on the Doos and don'ts. think safety

I learned to run tractor on a Ford 6600 ex-government loader tractor. It had a heavier front axle under it than usual, lots of hydraulics, and a god-awful massive Boss front-end loader on it. The first thing I did was pull the post-pounder around, then moved bales and fed cattle with it. Running a loader isn't the best way to introduce someone to driving a tractor, but it does work. And, surprisingly, I only wrecked one set of bale spears! ;-)

all have their pros &cons just my opinion from other posts the smallfords Nseries may be a good choice or massey equal one thing i dont like about the small fords is the gas tank is right on top of motor opens up chance forunseen fire.some mentioned allisC WC WD WD45 they always struck me as a bit light easy to turn over (NF) many an old farmer here had one pin them of course any will turn over just seemed to hear more about old ACs

The 8N's and the TO-35's had the individual brakes on one side and the clutch on the other. Much easier to get out of a jam with as there is not a clutch and brake on the same side. Also both brakes can be pressed at the same time while the clutch is depressed. Big safety improvement over the earlier designs. Floorboards were a nice addition, too. Like stated prior, parts are abundant for either the massey or the ford. I started on a 135 and am still learning, for 23 years now. HTH

Let's go Mountaineers,

Aaron

Chris--

My experience----we've done some Farmalls and a couple of JD's and Fords. Hands down, no joke, based on our experience--go with a Ford N--9N, 2N 8N. Simple to work on, parts readily available and no more expensive, maybe even less expensive than other brands....Most New Holland dealers will carry what you need and our local dealer watches pirces of aftermarket guys and stays competitive.
I've never seen an old tractor I didn't like but I continue to marvel at the engineering that went into these Ford N machines. (All my remarks would apply to a Ferguson too.)

I'd vote for one of the Fords, like an 8n, jubilee, or 6-800 series. They are easy to work on. Of course, maybe it's because that's what I started on, too!!

I raised three sons, they were around tractors from birth to adult hood, My choice for safety would be a BR John Deere or a C Case, with there clutches adjusted for easy operation ,I think the hand clutches are the way to go for safety for a young driver.

MF-135, pwr str, live PTO, stable, reliable, much more work than the old "n" Fords. This will make you a nice additional really usable tractor. Tom

I learned at about 10 yrs old on a Ford 8N in the middle of my uncles oat field they had just combined. The tractor was easy to handle and it was a long way to any fences. Another good choice would be a garden tractor. They start steer and shift the same as full size.

I would say an older Ford (9n,2n,8n ,Naa etc) or Ferguson (20,30,35 50 etc) would be worth considering if you are looking for an older machine. They are low, easy to get on and off, short and manuverable , cant be started in gear with the starter by accident, they steer easy , the seat can be moved way ahead to accommodate a child and the pedals would be easy for a child to work as they use a more down ward motion.

My father taught me on a IH W-4. It has a large platform for dad to stand on right by jr's ear to be able to talk through any problems. Basicly a loboy H tractor as far as parts, so fixing jobs are cheap and easy, low to the ground, and wide front. They have a push-pull ignition key so emergency engine kills are easy also. Roomy, easy to fix, low, slow, and safe. Mike

I started out around 9 or 10. Raking hay, pulling manure spreader, hay wagon, drag harrow, etc. Which is how I started my kids. If you are going to buy them a tractor then take them with you and let them operate all the controls with-out it running and see how it fits them. If they can reach all the pedals and controls without getting out of postion in the seat will be safer for them.

I will be 30 in two weeks. When I was 5 I could drive my grandfather 2n with my mom on the seat, I worked the clutch and everything else she was the safty net. When I was 10 I ran a Farmall H with a sickle mower, self propelled swather, and a 560 with the drag in the corn field. At 11 I was moved up to the 666 with the 4 row cultivator. This was my summer job at my uncles in SD. At these ages I was growing up in Denver Co. these were the only times I was around tractors. If your kids have level heads they should be just fine. If you are concerned and looking at antiques, my opinion, find a hand clutch. In reaction time I think its easier to grab with my hand than push with my foot.

One with power steering couldn't hurt, prob better off without a loader. Just my two cents.

Well if your wanting to stick with AC I would say a B, C, CA, WD or WD45. Or even an RC but the RCs are harder to find. Shoot I even know where you could get a WD or WD45 and maybe even a C since I have all of those for sale at this time

I would go with a A-C B or C. They are an A-C (which you like) and are much cheaper in my area than a Ford of any size (about 2x) They also have a really wide seat that you could ride along with them and sit down at the same time.

I started at 11 on a 990 Case-DB. First around the house, then 2 days later raking hay. By the next year I was running the haybine, and the baler the next.

I agree, a wide front tractor around 20 hp would probably be best. I am 16 years old now, started driving lawnmowers around the age of 7, graduated at age 10 to our MF 265 60hp tractor with loader doing light jobs with my Dad on. After I got the feel of the tractor and the basic do's and dont's, I was on my own. Have had 6+ years of driving full-size tractors with only one minor "incident". As long as your children know the basics and start off slow, they should be fine.

my grandpa started me on a wd when i was about 9 or 10 b/c of the hand clutch and they are simple and sturdy tractors. i have started my oldest son on the old 37 wc. with a pedal extention on the clutch raking hay and occasionally pulling empty wagons. i love these tractors but i will agree with the before said wide front end being of some importance to the equasion for safety reasons if you arent working with level ground.

I started on H Farmall, cut/rake hay, plow, disk cultivate. Next step up was M- 3 bottom plow, 4 row cultivator, big disk- bit harder on steering. Currently get to play in the dirt with a 350D- live PTO and hydrualics improvement over H, handles about same. Something about 30-50 hp with ROPS would be good starter/utility for teenager- a 300 IHC would have live PTO for cutting grass/hay. A sister has a VA Case with Eagle hitch- handy for mowing and big garden tractor on acreage, nieces learned on it. D17 used now? Try for something about same general layout. Could maybe get a B IHC with 2 seats- Archives had a couple postings about one setup that way-maybe picture gallery has it, would be a way to watch student driver safely. RN.

I agree with JDknut on the small Ford. It is small enough that they can see over and reach anything on it. Nice for a kid to be able to stand on the ground and look in the gas tank. I think disking, raking or other things that use the drawbar or 3-point. May stay away from anything that runs off the PTO until you are sure they know the dangers of the PTO.

Christopher;
I would prefer young children start on a low profile tractor with a wide front end. An Allis "B" or "CA" with a wide front would be your ideal tractor. Lots of them around and parts are readily available.
I prefer Case tractors and a "VA" or a "VAI" would be along the line of the Allis's.
Farmall "A" would be a good choice.
These tractors are all in the 20 horsepower range and all can be fitted with 5 foot belly mowers for mowing grass.
My first tractor driving job was driving a Farmall "H" pulling a wagon and hay loader picking up loose hay while my dad and older brothers loaded the wagon. I was 6 years old... Gene

Ford 8N, 2N, or 9N probably best choice: plentiful, still relatively cheap (leastways up here) easy to get parts for simple, small yet useful due to hydraulics and 3 pt. Other candidates: Deere 40, 420, 430, Ford-Ferguson TO-20, TO-30, Massey 35, 135. IH Farmall C, H, M, Allis WC, B, etc. some of this depends on budget and some of these may be hard to find. Just my $0.02.
