Was looking at a tractor today and saw something I've never seen. The coil was mounted upside down, so that the coil wire goes in from the bottom. Does that have any effect on the coil? Most of the coils I see are mounted upright or on there side.

You can mount a coil any which way you want but loose, and even loose they will work. So no it does have any effect on how it works. Sort of like you could take you computer and turn it up side down and it will also work just fine, other then maybe the disc drive which might not work if you did that. One nice thing about mounting a coil that way is its less likely to short out if it gets wet. I've seen more then one coil when wey have a spark jumping all over the top of it because of water sitting on/in it
