After checking with the parts sources for a manifold heater relay for a 92 Dodge Cummins, not only does Dodge not offer them anymore, but my parts house checked and there is not one listed available in the US or Canada. Dodge advertises on TV that they are the most reliable trucks on the market, but they don"t offer replacement parts for the many trucks still on the road.
I am pi$$ed big time.
Richard

A good place to look for relays and other switches in general is Cole hersee co. Some auto
parts stores may even give you a catalog. Or just
look them up on line. They have a good line of
heavy duty electrical items. I use alot of there
products on our county snowplow trucks and they
hold up good. Jim WJ

The Cummins ISB 5.9 is pretty common, you should be able to get the engine serial number off the timing cover and take that to a Cummins shop, such as Cummins Mid-South around me, for the part. I work at a Freightliner dealer and that engine is used in alot of the panel vans you see running around for bakeries and uniform companies. Most Freightliner dealers are Cummins certified for parts and repair, they shouldn't have a problem getting an ENGINE part as long as you have the engine serial number. They won't be able to help on Dodge parts for the rest of the truck.

I just read your original post and see someone already made the same suggestion as myself, sorry to repeat. I thought of a question though, you said you watched the relay melt, is the heater shorted out? I was just wondering why the relay would melt and also where is the relay located? Is the the relay located in a Dodge fuse/relay panel or on the engine. Is the relay similar to the other relays around it, and could you switch it with something less important for purposes of testing? Just thinking out loud here.

I know your busy with the sick kiddo, hope she gets better.

Chris.

Richard,
Give Jim Jessup in North Vernon Indiana a call. Wish I had his number here. He tunes up B series engines and sells parts.
I know he can help you.

THese are just a 100 amp rated relay. You can get them from an RV store or shop. RV's use them for turning coach power on and off. But if that isn't feasable you can replace them with a plain 4 pole metal cased starter relay. 2 big poles and 2 #10 poles. They need the two small wires so the engine computer/timer can control them.

Try checking at another dealer. My little sister was told by a Pontiac dealer that the part she needed for her seat belt was no longer available and couldn't be found. She went to another dealer and was told "no problem", readily available but with limited color selection. Some dealers just are more interested in selling parts than others.

I will post the numbers tomorrow. I appreciate any and all help I can get on this. After all this hassle with my son's truck for two days, then his 8 week old daughter had to go in the hospital this afternoon with a viral respiratory infection. Makes the Dodge trouble seem small.
Thanks, Richard

Most relays are available in aftermarket supply. I worked at a factory that made relays and we would make the same relay for several different customers. The only difference would be the markings on the outside and the retail price. Same relay could range from $2 to $60 depending on which name was on the cover.
If you have some numbers from the old relay, post them and someone may help find one.

There should be some off-the-shelf replacement part that should work, it just has to have an equal or higher amperage reading.

I have a 92 Cummins Dodge. There have been several times that it would have been nice to over-ride the manifold heater... Say it is 50 degrees, battery is low (this truck sits a lot) The heater kicks in, & robs the power you need to run the starter.. I have wondered about a manual switch, but it would have to be tied into a thermostat, and you would have to remember to turn it off...
