Where are these storms going after they dump on you guys? They don't make it to NY. It's like we've been moved to Virginia or somethin'. All that snow going to waste out there in the flat lands that we could be skiing on if you guys would share it.

Well Allan it might melt about April so you can find Gary's tractor lol. Sure making it wet down here too. I-40 W of Amarillo done closed again and 287 to Colorado all shut down again just like last week. Only enough snow to cover ground so far here but it's coming sideways so hard to tell.

The Midwest refugees in Oregon always say "Ya don't have to shovel rain"- now I see why. Brush off that seat before you go plowin' today so you stay out of "Soggy Bottom"
Did you get my message on that Suburban tranny?

TH400 in a 3/4 ton 4x4 '91 Burb works good. Question is about replacing it w/ a 700R4 that has been upgraded. How do I tell a "good" (as in improved cluthes) from a bad one? If I was to visit my local tranny shop what would I ask for, look for?
The rig does more family duty than towing so mileage is becoming a factor.

Much thanks. Grub

Yes,

You would be way happier with the overdrive.

Any "quality" tranny shop willl not mess around with anything other than a good, solid, "updated" 4L60 anyhoo. Just too darned much bad history on the earlier ones.

Just make sure they understand that you want one to fit a '91/92 4X4. Also, you will have to change out the transfercase adaptor, the throttle cable and add the electrical wiring for the converter lock. Perhaps even a shorter driveshaft too in some cases.

Good news is that you will gian a 27% overdrive ratio at the tranny along with an 8% efficency gain in the converter by stopping that slip.

Fact is, why not just let those boys do the job? They work on 'em all day long and it would save you a bunch of head scratchin/scroungin' for parts, etc.

Thanks Allan. You have confirmed my thoughts though I am not familiar w/ the 4L60. I concur on the shop doing the whole job- my wife could tell you about the money we've spent after "saving" money.
Next time I'm in Nebraska lunch is on me.

Happy New Year to ya!

The rest of the story:

Don't tell Gary, but his outfit is all torn down into very small pieces and it makes it harder to locate. :>)
