Well I have been studing these 8 pictures of this tractor, and I notice that the Intake Manifold had sort of a square look to it instead of the usual round look to it. I have seen some with the "Squarish" look but I have seen most with the round. Was there a differance? Did different year models have slightly different types?

Just a little something I notice and thought I ask..

Thec 68 model was the first to have a square intake manifold. It was a sign of major changes that were to come in the 1969 model.

Were any of these engine changes applicable to the 3020? If so, what was changed and can it be spotted by eye?

If you have the serial numbers, post on the John Deere board and someone can look it up for you. Tom

I may be mistaken but the square intake denotes 1970 and newer.

1969 through 1972 models had the squared off manifolds (along with upgraded engine)

My 1968 4020d sure has the square intake manifold. It also used to have the 24v starter and generator.

Well I am thinking this tractor was supposed to be a 68 it DOES have the round muffeler instead of the oval Muffeler. Do you think it possible that some one swaped engines?

Also what were the upgrades that were made in the "Newer" engines?

It was chaged in 68 and again in 70 or 71. I have a 67,69 and 71 and all have different manifolds. I dont know why exactly, the square ones may breath a little better, or maybe to thwart M&W with their turbo. I'm not sure but some styles might not clear the Nippondenso replacement starters.
