Ok...here is the question.
Dad left me an International straight truck with an Eaton 2 speed rear axle.
Good shape, 5 speed, V8 gas engine. He used it to haul grain for years.
Now I want to bring it down here from the farm.
Heres the hitch. How on earth do you down shift the rearend without tearing something up?
I drove that thing years ago, and could always up shift with no problem. But, when I want to go to low range on the 2 speed...I always grind the gears going in.
I do not want to tear it up, I need help in figuring this thing out.
The other half told me to hire someone to drive it down here. Ok...I could, but I have to learn to shift the thing sometime.

Just drive it home in high range empty,then take the cover off the shifter and clean it up and lub it.Also make sure all electrical connections are secure and making good connections.

Now that brings back some memories! Been years since I drove one of those. With a full load of grain going uphill with an old straight-six, if you missed the split downshifting you'd be down in first or second gear for sure. Here's what I remember:

Never use the clutch when you downshift just the axle; you have to rev up the driveshaft to get the two-speed to finish its downshift. Punch the shifter down and give it plenty of gas to shift.

I never used the clutch to upshift. Pull the knob, let off the gas; listen to it fall into gear.

When you do a split upshift, you can use the clutch. Just punch the shifter down an instant before you let out the clutch and it should downshift.

Split downship pull the knob out before you start to shift. Should be in high range by the time you get the transmission downshifted.

It's generally a bad idea to downshift the axle going down a steep grade. If you miss the shift, you'll be free-wheeling. Also, the rear end runs a lot hotter in low range, something I discovered when I had a third member blow up on me going downhill.

Last and most important thing: Never park the truck with the axle in high range. It can pop out of gear on its own and the truck will roll away.

Allen you are correct...I've driven both and a farm truck don't shift like a road truck !! It just don't !!

I own 2 Internationals with 5+2 in them. For what you are going to do just leave it in high.... button up. I love the 5 and 2...I wish they still made them in the newer trucks. They are the best on hills. Until you get used to it just keep it in high.

i seldom split shift. if you are loaded I always stay in the low range. when empty, i use the high range.

Bill, Having driven many 2 speed rears and some 3
speed eaton tandems and a large selection of trucks with aux transmissions, 16 speed spicer
two stick, 18 and 20 speed mack , many 5 and 3 ,
and 5and 4 .

This may sound like an over simplifcation , but
always shift the main box with the aux in high,
this includes rear axles.

The one thing you should not do is shift both
at the same time , you may get away with it most
of the time but eventually you will get the drive
shaft uncoupled from the gears at both ends , then you will start over .

I know it's a farm truck, but the same

procedure applies . I grew up driving a 1941 IH

with 4 sp and 2 sp rear, the rear was not elec,

air , or vacuum , it was manual shift ( extra

shifter in the floor ) , and you will learn to

shift it like an aux trans .I think I still

have the extra shifter somewhere here in the

shop , I kept it because most have never seen

one with manual shift .

Yeah, I remember those too.

But he doesn't have a brownie in his truck.

It is a spring loaded 2-speed rear end and a new process 5-speed in front. About the simplist outfit ya ever crawed in.

Bill, I drove them for years. To shift from say 5th. high to 5th. low hold down on the throttle to keep the engine under a load. Push the button down and then let up on the gas and back down within a second or less. When shifting from low to high keep a load on the engine and pull the button up. Then let off the gas and mash the clutch just as if you were going to shift the transmission. You will hear the axel shift then let out on the clutch and you are in high range. I have not liked UP shifting without the clutch as it will sometimes grind. It also don't jerk by using the clutch. I agree that you can use high range in an empty truck on the road and not need to shift. Look over the visor for gear range as not all are the same. Some will have 5th. high as 10th. gear and 5th. low as 9th. Others have 5th. high as 10th. and 4th. high as 9th.

There are two ways of doing this the way i down shift a two speed is to let off the gas for a split second and then hit the gas to INCREASE THE RPMs with out using the clutch it will take awhile to get this down PAT but in time you will get it down . Some guys use the clutch and gas pedal together weather going up or down .Also NO TWO TRUCKS drive the same i don't care if they are sister trucks made back to back with everything the same it just does not happen . My buddy and i both bought 77 4300 Egeals both came with NTC 350 small cam cummins both had 12513 Road rangers both trucks had 4.33 gears both had the same tires and they were both built back to back on the line only one # differant in the S/N and the paint skeem was a bit differant they did not drive the same and did not run the same when first put on the road his would out pull mine but i had him buy 4-5 mph on the top end he got a half mileper gallon better then mine did mine burnt oil from day one and had to be inframed at 45000 miles his did not shift wright from day one and had to have a clutch and have the transmission replaced in the first month , when it rained i needed and sump pump and rain suit his did not leak they had to remove the roof and reseal mine So we can all give ya ideas on HOW TO DO IT but it will come down to WHAT THE TRUCK LIKES. That is why we always call them SHE's there just like WIMMEN!!!!!

Just push the button down, let up on the gas, and then put your foot on the gas pedal again. It should have shifted. Clear as mud ain't it? Tell ya what, just shift that thing into high when you first start out, and then leave it there. There really is no need to worry about the two speed if the truck is empty. Once you get it home, maybe someone can stop by and give you some lessons.

It has been decades since I have done it but move the knob and then do what you would do if you were downshifting the five-speed, without using the clutch. There is a lot of room for improvement on this instruction.

You have to bring your RPM up to down shift it just take practice to get the right rpm for the speed don't run the engine over half speed until you get the feel for it. have your Dad or someone teach you about double clutching a truck.

Bill,

First off, never use the clutch to shift the rear end. Just hold a load against the drive train with the throttle, push the button down.

When you are ready to make the shift, just let off the throttle and then push it back down again. The rear end will fall right into the low side when the tension is released.

To shift up, same thing. Hold the load against the truck, pull the button up, when you are ready to shift just let off the throttle and up she comes. You will always hear it rattle past a few teeth until you give it throttle and the sync is found.

Pull that driver's visor down and the insturctions are all printed there on a tag.

Also, that transmission is a bit "wacky" when it comes to shifting while heavily loaded.

If I remember right, 4th high is faster than 5th low, so you can "improve" the climb by doing a split-shift coming up the chain with a really heavy load. I.E. 4th low straight to 5th low, back to 4th high then finally on to 5th high.

That sequence is true if you have an overdrive transmission , one that has 4 th and 5th gear locations reversed. But not for a direct thans.
