Hey All,

I have a '79 GMC 6000, it's a 2 axel dual rear wheel dump truck rated to 20,000 pounds. I keep it mostly on the property, but I like to go get some supplies with it now and then. I need to get insurance for it, but Geico doesn't insure that type of vehicle. I found Progressive Comercial insurance but they want $1000/year. I only put on about 10 miles last year and never took it off the property. Any clue where to get cheap insurance so I can get it registerred? This is in Northern California.

Thanks,
Keith

I've got a full tandem here ('96 IH Eagle). It's got 2 mil PLPD, nothing else, on a Commercial Farm/Fleet policy. That truck costs 198 bucks. The '98 Ford Ranger pickup on the same policy is over 700 bucks, but that's got some collision/all perils coverage too. The policy is with Aviva....
We don't bother putting anything but PLPD on the tandem because it's already fully depreciated. We bought it for scrap price, and iffin I stick her in the woods someday, she's still worth scrap price. I'll part her rather than take half as much (or less) from the insurance company. That's how I see it anyway.

Just call it your Classic and go to State Farm Insurance, I have a 1 ton dump I use only once in a while, maybe 100 miles per year and I pull a 25 foot trailer some times, I get $5,000.00 coverage FULL COVERAGE, $50.00 deductible, for $90.00 a year... and you can't beat that no way.....

Yep, I agree. Find a real insurance company.

I use this old truck all year long and it costs me something in the neighborhood of $70 a year.

My "69 Kaiser"s got 8 wheels on the back. Costs me $190/yr for heavy liability ($500M). If I wanted to commercially haul stone, it would be substantially more. My use is similar to yours, but I drive it more and occasionally pull a trailer. My sole truck.

Currently with Erie Ins. Just got a letter from Allstate, who insured me before, asking if I wanted a quote. Both are commercial policies, discounted some as I have a pair of vans insured.

I"ve heard stories about trouble insuring "dump trucks". If you call it a GMC 6000, gvw 20,000, you might do better. Mine dumps, but I"d never call it a "dump truck" to an insurance agent. That sounds like something that hauls stone for customers.

I have a 78 ford f600 dump in NY and I only paid 150. year for insurance through allstate, but the vehicle was for personal use and it was pleasure. I know your vehicle is heavier but if you aren't using it for a business and it will only see 10 mile distances you should be able to get it alittle cheaper I think. Maybe California is different give it a try shop around to different Insurance companies goodluck

I just bought a ford one ton with a flat bed on it and went the KY Farm Bureau office where I have all my insurance. They had to write it up as a "comerical farm" vehical seeing as it had a flat bed and rated over 10,000, I was scared to death. I was thinking it was going to cost out the rear. Full coverage on the thing is $380 a year, it cost about 500 a year to insure my other truck and car each with just liability. Don't know if California Farm Bureau would be the same or not.

Hope this helps.

Dave

I struggle with the same thing in WA. I have a dump truck and a bucket truck and the cost of insuring them for a public road is astronomical.

Hence they stay on the farm and I cant help anybody out except the neighbors.

Let me know if you find any good answer.

We also have a fairly steep registration fee

Trucks Lic in WA and Insur state Re: Dump truck in in reply to phil_in_WA, 01-11-2007 22:11:37
I live in Wa and here is how you can vastly reduce farm truck lic cost. One if you have a farm you can cut the cost in half by getting the Lic as a Farm Truck there are some restrictions check with the state as to what they are. This would be a Farm Lic NOT a Farm Permit big difference, In Wa there is NO Lic Tag fee for any truck. The fee is for Tonnage. And misc filing fees. If you GWV is over 14000 GVW you can get tonnage by the month, just buy what you need for that month, it is available in 2000lb increments. You have to buy at least14000 for the first due reup every year that tags are due. But this can be higher a weight min depends of the empty weight of the truck. I have 10000 empty on a GMC 7000 and can buy lowest 16000 on it and a Chev 301T dually at 8000 empty and get the lowest 14000 on it.
As for insurance Grange insurance Wa will insure trucks at a very low cost even though they don't carry all of your insurance with them just need to have ANY main carrier. They can also put the insurance on when needed. Just look in the yellow page under Insurance for Grange. Most all the Trucks around here are grain dump beds mostly insured for the months "Harvest time". Mine don't dump and it does make a difference. I don't have casualty, just the legally required liability, Check it out for yourself. I think I have my costs down to as low as I can legally get ;))

PS in WA DONT get caught with more weight than you bought that will get REAL expensive for you!!!
They are real NASTY in WA about that ;((
