I put an ad in our local shoppers paper for straw to sell. Guy called me, got directions to the farm. Came out, bought two whole bales and I had to jump start his truck to get him out of here. So far I made half the cost of the ad.
Oh Well,
Paul

Yep, people have been scrounging around here more than usual over the last year or so. I live in a rural, one that has alot of dairy industy, but since the price of milk has been down for awhile and the input costs are always climbing, it has created a domino effect of sorts with other Agri buisnesses, so there isn't too much money floating around here right now. Lots of homes for sale, that trend started last fall, I think it is folks that were hoping to sell out while real estate was at it's peak since there has been talk of real estate prices going down in the near future and then I think they are hoping to be able to rebuy when the prices go down some, but I kinda doubt the prices are going to go down much, after all, how can it when they stopped making land years ago, but they say for what the average home sells for now would require an $80,000 a year income to pay the payments, so thats making home ownership for many an impossible reality. Whats making the prices so high?, because there are some folks thats got the money, and there just happened to be enough of them to drive the prices out of sight. Theres quite a few baby boomers who own 2 homes for summer and winter get aways, but I have read about some having 3-4 homes, and expensive ones at that. Doctors and lawyers for example can make over $200,000 a year and theres some highy successful entrepeneurs that have made billions in their lifetimes, last I looked, bill Gates III was worth 60 billion dollars, and I heard he is now thinking about retiring, but he is far from the only billionaire out there, and countless millionaires. Dad tells me you could buy a brand new GMC pickup with all the bells and whistles sold for $2,200 way back when he was young, but now they cost $35,000-50,000 for one of those. I find myself wondering how much money it is going to take to retire in 40yrs?. I personally know the job market is tough tough tough.

interesting post. I believe most people are so heavy in debt that they will never get out. Face it this country is broke- corporate, personal, and govermental. Happy Trails

I don't believe the country is broke, but I do believe if you don't rise to the top, you may see the day you will starve. There is quite a few out there with a spending problem. People don't seem to grasp the concept of saving for the future and how much money they lose in paying interest charges, especially buying things that they could get by without with money they don't have. The country does have a negative savings rate currently, but it is currently just -.5% or some such which is not too bad yet, but understand that some folks have bigger negative savings problems than others. The credit cards are too tempting for some folks, and when folks go shopping for a new automobile, its the salesmans job to talk them into a more expensive model that they really can't afford, or when folks go to buy a home, they tend to buy more house than they can afford. When stuff costs so much it is gotten far easier to spend more than you make and most folks have got the fever to keep up with the joneses and we live in a very throw away society with less and less of the population haveing skills to fix anything themselves and then theres the mentality that unless its new it is junk.

The economy still stinks in many small rural areas plus you just had an election and got another major election coming with fuel and cost of everything always going up instead of down or stabilizing with no real fast answer to our energy cost problems because of tail draggin politicians and people spending way more than they are worth so is it any surprise?

I've had a lot of people asking about stuff but so far in the last year or 2 not one has spent any money on any of it.

My sales all went flat early last fall. Finally took a bunch of stuff to a local consignment auction just to get it out of my way. Actually ended up making a very small profit. I might try the consignment auction thing again, or maybe start doing some swap meets. I think most folks just like to see and touch the items before they buy. You just can't do that with internet sales.

Yes, they were up. But if they have been doing the same as wheat they have been going down since the first of the year. Our local elevator cash wheat price went down about $0.60/bushel since the first, but yesterday and today it has come back $0.35/bushel. Suppose I should sell what I have in the bin, but then it will probably go to $5.00/bushel and then I won't have any to sell!! I could have got $4.86 the day I harvested it, but I was waiting for $5.
