I need advice and direction on which winch to buy. I occasionally haul 3500lb to 4500lb small tractors a few hundred miles and use a small 7000lb low-boy trailer to do it. Occasionally one won't start and I hand winch it on which is not easy so I have been looking at electric winches. I know enough to look at a planetary gear model and would like to find one I can temporarily mount and unmount for theft prevention.

Trouble is, there are dozens of choices and I don't have an idea what level to start looking and what lb. pull will get the job done. I don't want to spend too little and fail any more that I want to spend too much and not use it enough. I don't want to buy Harbor Freight and I do want a brand name like Ramsey or ??. What should I start looking at and what do you think it would cost? I'm thinking in the $400? to $800? range but I really don't know much about winches or prices. I am looking for advice and think this is the place to get it. Thank you in advance.

Dan, I am using a 10,000 Warn winch. I have made my winch mount versital so it can be used for other purposes other than on my trailer. As you will see from photos. I also have a easy lift reciever on the front of several pickups so I can use the winch on them as needed.

As others have mentioned running snatch block is a must!! Not only does it increase pulling capacity, BUT if need be you can pull your load left or right on trailer(if you have no steering or any other reason).

the only thijng I would and am going to change on my setup is the tubing on the "T" I made, I am going to chance it to pipe, so the winch can pivot left or right depending on how I am pulling my load onto trailer.HTH

I BOUGHT A HARBOR FREIGHT 8500 LB WINCH AND MOUNTED IT ON MY 16 FOOT TRAILOR. I PAID $300 FOR IT AND IT HAS PAID FOR ITSELF. I ALSO HAUL TRACTORS AND THIS WINCH BEATS A COMEALONG. THE HEAVIEST THING I HAVE WINCHED WAS A IH 656 WITH FOUR FLAT TIRES. I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE A COVER FOR IT BECAUSE IT SITS OUTSIDE.

I've been an off road trail guide for years so my knowledge of winches is only based on 4 wheeling. I just bought a new 9.5 Super Winch. it was the best for my use becouse unloaded line speed is critical for my aplication and if you take one apart and see how they are built you will see why. Warn is the world leader and they are easy to use. They cost extra for some reason.
Ramsey are great and they have a lower cost line of winch that I really like. For you I would consider the harbor freight winch. Mile Marker sells the same winch with their name on it. Ya it's a china winch but they have a good reputation for such a cheap winch. I can't see any reason you would need the kind of line speed I need so I would not pay for it. My next choice and probably the one I would but is the Ramsey Rep 850 Its 8.5k and I saw it in their Oklahoma factory and it is built nice. It is only priced cheap because they needed a winch to compete with the good winch from china and they know I guy like me will spend twice as much for a faster winch. I happen to have the latest Petersons 4 wheel and off road magazine in my laptop bag and national tire wheel has them for $429. You dont need a roller fairlead because the guide(hawse) for the cable it comes with works fine. Use fat welding cable for the wiring because they all draw a ton of current. Northern Hydraulics stocks a good line of winches, shipping is high. They have a lot of info in thier catalog to help decide on the size. One thing that I would reccomend is a snatch block It will slow you down but will double your pulling capacity. Ithink that a fair lead can be a benifit when you are loading a dead tractor at an angle. We installed a small pick up truck tool box on our trailer and mounted the winch inside it for theft and weather protection. We do not load any of our antique tractors under power.the largest is an IHC WD-40 and they range down to a IHC 10-20
