What is the purpose(s) of battery boxes? I have several tractors but no boxes. Do I need the boxes?

Lots of reasons for a battery box.

To keep the shrapnel inside if the battery explodes. Just wuz there.

Vibration kills batteries. Bolt 'em down.

Vacherie,
In addition to protecting the battery, at least one type of original SA box had two bolts on the inside at the top screwed into the steering wheel/switch panel support assembly and four smaller bolts & nuts on the (outside) bottom of the box to attached the base to the tractor. The box serves as a part of the steering wheel/switch panel support structure. The steering wheel support will be somewhat unsteady without the battery box properly bolted down. BTDT.

It's to protect the battery from dirt, weather, water and getting hit by branches, flying debris, etc. And of course to keep them from bouncing around. What kind of tractors do you have and how are the batteries mounted?

The tractors I was talking about were Farmall SA, SAV, and C. I use bungee cords. These tractors are mostly for just riding around except the SA which I use for cultivating. Thanks for the feed back.
