We didn't get surcingles until 1959. Brand new DeLaval that year. My Grandfather did have a milking machine in 1914, however. That stuns a lot of people. It was a Hinman. It had moving arms above the cows stalls that were powered by a gasoline engine that was located outside.

I am greeted by the surcingles hanging on the wall every morning I walk into the barn. I am really wondering how you might have woke up with one in your hand in the morning, must have been one duzy of a night. In case a few people didn't have the priviledge of being around dairy cows, a surcingle was a leather or vinyl strap that went around a cows belly to hold the surge bucket milker or breaker cup(type of pipeline milker) at just the right height and length from a cows teats.

Shoulda known , many here would know, and mebbe even still be using surcingles. After the first few years of your life in the 40's and 50's, traditionally you would hit the (cold) floor, dress, and go to the barn to milk in the morning, quickly; before you were completely awake. Only after milking was done, would we go to the house fer breakfast. Used to hate washing the things and cleaning the hair etc out of the pulsators. My doozy nights out didn't come until the early 60's.

I did that. The little black kitten got too close. Cow shifted her feet & all I saw was a little bit of tail.

Oh, geezzzzz .....

Shoulder-blocked into the cow, looked down, & a little black face was looking up at me - meow? Wondering if there was any milk coming yet.

The bedding pack musta saved it.

Turned out to be the longest living farm cat I've had, he lived through a severe beating from a dog, parvo, and getting a loaded wagon run over him when the dog scared him under the moving wagon. Quite the cat.

Thanks for the memories.

Amazing spitting cats had it in for the new farmhand!!!

We used to have dairy cows. Had a cat named MilkBum for this very reason seen right here. He would actually climb the cows leg if he thought you were ignoring him.

Most internet pictures can be downloaded by rightclicking the pic and selecting "Save Picture As" Rename the pic and save it to where ever you want. Some are clickable links and it may not give you the option.

Cheers,

Aaron

Back when I was a kid my uncle use to do the cats like that. Being a city boy at the time I thought that was the coolest thing I had ever seen. Back in the 60's. We later moved to our farm and had our own small dairy. When my son was small he would come to the barn and my Dad would shot him with cows milk on his pants or shirt. Aw the memories. stay safe Tim

That picture brings back some memories. Did that for several years. As I get older I actually begin to think I miss those times. Maybe I just being as young as I was back then. lol

Back in the 70's, when cat milk was all the rage, we ran a herd of 45 mixed calicoes and tabbies. On a good day, we could get 2.5 gallons of milk.

My brother and I liked the milk so much we used to drink it straight from the bucket. Dad would be fiddling with the milk machine, and we'd be off in the corner chugging down that sweet cat milk as fast as we could.
