Hi Dave,

And had you bought a new home in 2005 you would have lost about 15% to 20% in 2006.

Most investments are long term. The short term up and downs always look great/horrible in just about any thing.

Greenspan is predicting a recession the last half of 2007, maybe early 2008 for the USA.

You've only lost that $5k if you cash in. Otherwise, you haven't actually lost anything. It's like a boat floating on the sea, bobbing on the waves. Sometimes it rides up, sometimes it sinks down.

Maybe for you guys that are just investing its just on paper.....wait until you retire and living on the interest..... .10yrs. ago I was doing fine as a mater of fact investments making 10 to 20 percent some years.....we knew that woulden't last..... but now we have cut back as much as we can.....we are disabled and 71 years old.....if we don't die shortly we can't eat..... our investment is down by over 50,000.....

Just like the saying goes, "If you cant stomach the market then dont put money in it" I lost $5K too on Tuesday.....But it always comes back in time. On one of the Putnam funds they have a graph that show if you put $10,000 in their Growth and income funds in 1957 it would be worth $2,300,000 now in 2006. The stock market is a way for middle class guys like me to make money in the long run and retire.

I'd rather have my money in something I can go out and touch like real estate.'Value' may drop but I still feel better about owning a piece of land no matter what price its valued at than a piece of paper issued by a suddenly worthless company

Didn't we all. BUT you can't lose what you didn't have. Canola has also gone down $.65 or more in the last three weeks, but I didn't sell all of it at $8.23 when it was there, but I don't feel I LOST that, or not yet anyway. I plowed snow to get to round bales for 5 hours this morning and a blizzard moved in at 3 pm. I can do it all tomorrow again. That time fuel and effort I did lose.

If you had invested in the market on the day after the crash of October 1987 and held it until now even after this drop, you would have been a genius.

...but that is the stock market. UNLESS you are cashing in tomorrow it won't matter that much. Remember, the stock market is for the LONG haul. Give it a few months and see what happens, if you watch it every day you'll go crazy.

Oh, I am gonna ride it on out, I stopped adding to it when I resigned, I have it well diversified so I aint too worried, its been averaging 12% or better so it just kinda caught me off gaurd. We are putting a lot of cash into CD's right now at 5.5% or better and that will continue for some time. I just do a savings vs debt comparison at the end of every month to make sure we staying on the right side of the trend.

If you are that savvy an investor you understand that minor corrections happen from time to time. The actual percentage of market drop was small. I have no plans to sell so I didn't even check my portfolio.

I'm in a strange spot, I'm trying to save for retirement but I hate how share prices drive companies to do things. Things like laying off people because their profit didn't increase, whats wrong with a few million profit?

I'm gonna try to pay my mortgage off before I get too much more into the market.

I do the 401k and roth iras, but I paid off my mortgage a few years ago, it may not have been the "smartest" thing to do (according to the financial types) but it sure gives peace of mind.
