Any of you guys with Deltran Battery Tenders...

The instructions say to only hook the black clip to a grounded piece of metal on the chasis. I'm using mine on a modern car and there aren't a lot of big pieces of grounded metal around to hook to in close proximity to the battery (lots of nice plastic covers, though!).

Is it okay to leave a tender hooked up for long periods of time with the black clip on the neg post of the battery (and the red clip on the pos post)? This shouldn't harm anything, should it? What's the difference? Just trying to be sure you have a good ground? Thanks.

I love it they tell you to connect the black terminal to a ground away from the battery but they only give enough wire to reach the two terminals on the battery. Makes one wonder HUH ?????

The reason n theory behind what you stated is also true for "jumping" and its so you dont create any sparks near the battery when connecting or removing the leads. While hooking up and unhooking during and after a charge or jump on lead acid batterys theres s greater likelihood of expolsive hydrogen gases present which is why the connection AWAY from the batterys gasses is recommended.

like john t said...it's a safety issue. it will work connecting to both posts, but i guess it's up to you...you might decide the safe is better the day you see a battery explode.

Yeah, I don't know about the Deltrans but I use H.Freight's 'Battery Float Chargers' hooked to + and - on the battery.

electrically speaking, i don't see what the heck difference it makes whether you put it on the chassis or the neg post! In fact, you could say there would be a better contact by placing it on the neg terminal
