I have a Massey 35 which is approx. 1958 vintage. It has a marvel schrebler carb and here lies my problem. My friend Ernie came over and put a Carb kit in for me. I didn't use the tractor very much at the time and now cannot call Ernie as he has passed away. So, when I start the tractor it runs beutifully for about 3.5 minutes then quits. I let it sit 5 minutes and it starts right up runs 2 minutes and quits. I can do this all day. I drained the tank, cleaned the bowl/filter. It is getting fuel to the carb. It seems it has to fill its reservoir and when it runs out it quits. Could this be the float and or needle assembly? Any suggestions. Thanks Terry

Somebody on the Oliver forum had the same problem with his 88 recently. He put it together acording to the specs, but didn't concider wear. The float wasn't opening far enough to let in enough gas to keep it running for long. You might have to take it apart and bend the floats up just a little. Check by taking the drain plug out of the bottom of the carb and see how long you get a "good" stream of gas coming out.

At the risk of sounding trite, if the existing suggestions don't fix the problem it sounds like a restriction of fuel flow somewhere: during the five minutes off you accumulate enough fuel to run the 2 minutes before running out. Start at the needle valve (make sure needle AND seat are shiny clean/smooth, no crack in seat to bind needle when line tightened) and work backwards to tank. If you've got any extra fittings, try rigging temp line direct to carb from another container, to see if that helps. Good luck.

Hi Terry, I suspect the sediment bowl valve. It
may be "limed" up. As you describe this is likely
caused by this. Over the years good people even
put on new Carbs. to solve problem. Flow will go
thru but then gradually closes off. Overnite soak
in carb cleaner may do it but these are not very
high priced and might be good just to replace. One
other thought: maybe the fuel cap doesn't vent.
Try running with it loose. Good luck, Chuck

So you have good flow of clean fuel to carb. Is there a screen fitting on inlet of carb bowl? Some may have that and some won't but check there next to make sure not plugged screen. Might try squirting some carb cleaner in just inlet on carb or even WD-40 as needle may just be gummed up sticking and if that doesn't work pull it apart and put in another kit. Just be sure to check the float if it is fuel laden or collapsed replace it since new floats are available reasonably. Make sure float isn't bent rubbing on sides of carb bowl also. Can check the float for leaks by holding it in a pan of hot water (not boiling) with a pair of pliers and if any leaks will see air bubbles spewing out at leak.

Thanks Glen. I'll give that a try. Here's another ?. If in adjusting the float assuming it is not leaking, would adjusting by bending so it rides higher in the bowl have any thing to do with the needle and or refil flow. Thanks Terry

If you have a soft tip inlet valve it may be sticking shut...
