I've taken a few 9N's apart and I've never seen a pto shaft that wasn't splined. It has to be to fit through the hydraulic pump.

Yeah you are going to have to refer to the manual, but I seem to recall that there is a spring loaded detent ball in there that holds the lever in the operating and non-operating position(s).

been working on these for years// years ago and the old 9N's had a paddle shaped end, instead of a spline that went into the tranny-- I have rebuilt many by welding them up-- but I forget what goes wrong with the splined type-- if the splines are not stripped what puts it in gear-- I just thought someone would have an idea before I start taking the top off the tranny or trans. there must be a slip ring or something and linkage I just don't remember and my book has been loaned out and didn't come back yet

Not sure what you mean 'to reweld the paddle'???

The PTO shaft is splined because it 1) is powered by the transmission output and 2) it powers the hydraulic pump. Supposed to be that way.

What are you trying to repair?
