I"m using a corn stove in the house, but the last bit of corn had some fairly large chunks of cob ( about the size of your thumb) I"ve found a fanning mill nearby, if i ran the corn through that, would it remove those pieces? I know they are primairly for removing fines, and bees wings. if it matters, the unit i"m looking at is a model 859 David Bradley

They burn, but I'm having some issues w/ my unit, and the sales rep claims it's b/c it gets a cob stuck in the feed auger. I can guarantee that all the corn i ran this winter was clean, but this last has some chunks of cob in it, so we're sorting it by hand to eliminate that issue to trouble shoot this stove.

What's a fair price for a smaller unit w/ a set of screens in good shape?

thanks

I paid $50 at an auction ten or fifteen years ago. Sometimes they go for more, sometimes no bids at all.

My Clipper fanning mill has two screens, one that just passes the acceptable seed and the lower one that just keeps the acceptable seed, so it sorts out the big chunks and the fines. Feeds them out separate chutes. Some big fanning mills have 4 or 5 screens to separate the seed into sizes while cleaning too.

Don't the cob hunks burn well in the corn heater?

Not sure about that model, but most fanning mills have a scalping screen that takes out the larger pieces like cob and stalks before the grain hits the sieves and air stream.
