AC 6140 PTO question

Hi, I'm a new tractor owner and have already posted a question about brush hogs under the implement section.

Anyway here is my question. I have a AC 6140, it has two levers under the left side of the seat (one on the fender wall and the other on the frame/floor) The lever on the fender wall says PTO on or off. The one on the floor, I believe is what engages the PTO. The lever on the fender wall has to be pulled up to pull the other lever up, but then there is a God awfull grinding noise. What am I doing wrong?

To engage the PTO right now, I have been shutting the tractor off, and pulling the levers up, and then starting the tractor with the PTO on. That can't be good.

I hope I don't sound like to big of an idiot, but I figured that there was someone here who would be able to help me. Seems like there are a lot of knowledgable folks on here. Thanks!

Hope I"m not too late in replying, But I have a tractor with the same problem. The lever by the fender is a clutch just for the pto. It sholud work just like you think ; pull the clutch lever, pull up on the pto shifter, push the clutch lever back down. The squealing noise (at least on my tractor) is because the release bearing for the pto clutch is shot. To fix it you have to split the tractor. the bearing costs about $120 from an AGCO dealer, but it is a bear to fix. I"m fixing mine right now. If you ever get it fixed, don"t shut the pto off by leaving the pto clutch lever engaged, shift the pto out of gear. Next push the clutch lever back down. If you leave the lever up, it will wear out that bearing all over again. Just like if you ride the clutch all the time on a standard truck. Let me know if I can be of any help. other than that the 6140 is a really good tractor. Also don"t ever break your starter!
