never tried one, always used sickle bar/haybine--would like to try mowing down lawn gone to fields (large area) used JD #5 before and it worked pretty well- I'm just wondering if a rotary hay mower wouldn't do a better job, and how much bother they are to keep running. thanks

If you have a lot of hay to mow then yes they are definately better. They dont plug up and are easier to run I think. But if your just mowing a small amount then its not worth spending the money.

If you mean disc mowers they work very well. They are expensive, and most used ones are that used. Beware of a used one unless you know and or trust the guy selling it. Seems like a great expense to mow a lawn. If the no 5 works good I would stick with it, they are good mowers.
