Hello all, Not trying to start a Ford/Dodge war (I like them both and hate chevy's) but I was looking at an 01 Dodge dsl. SLT, ext. cab. I have always driven Ford's but respect the Cummins. Just wondering about ride (the Dodge impressed me) cab noise, driving quality and any problems to look for beyond the ordinary.

I have a 2003 Ford F-250 6.0 diesel that has been terrible. First 60K miles were great, but after that its been 2 turbos, 3 sets of injectors, and a complete engine replacement at 92K miles. Fortunately it was all under warranty except they kept the truck for a month to replace the engine. Not sure what I'll get to replace it but sure won't ever buy a new Ford again because of this. Maybe if I can find a '52 GMC or Chevy...those things seem to last forever!

Dboll, I have a 96 Dodge with 250K on it...runs and pulls like a champ, but over the miles it has had a few minor problems. Pulls a gooseneck from Texas to Indiana and back 3 times a year. Watch out for the 1999 1/2 thru 2001 engines. They had block problems. After 2002 they have a pretty good engine, but the older ones with the mechanical VT pump give ya better mileage.
Bottom line is, get which ever brand you like and feel comfortable with. They all have their good and bad points. Keep clean fuel in it and change oil like the manual says and you will do fine.

I have a 99 F350 SD dually with 7.3 diesel. I have replaced water pump and cam position sensor in the last two years. I have 263,000 on truck and range in the low 20's in fuel consumption consistently without any chip.My buddy recently got a 2007 2500 Duramax. We moved a Cat skidsteer out to a jobsite with mine and brought it back with his. Power was very comparable, ride was similiar. The Duramax is a lot quieter but also is decked in leather seats and warmers and all of that comfort. His gets between 12 and 15mpg. I realize not an apple to apple comparison. But the Duramax sank quite a bit with identical load and had a "lot" of sway on the highway(about 7500lbs).I would judge what you buy more from what needs you have then anything.I would also recommend that you get some drive time on the units that interest you.I have driven some of the Dodges, they are truly awesome in the powertrain. Fuel mileage and maintenance are probably the only real issues. Ford is very proud of their parts also. Just my "opinion" based on my experiences. Good luck to you.

If they ever put a cummins in a Ford...
Had 5 cummins dodges, not the best truck body.
01? The 02 ate injection pumps every 30,000. Redesign rail system in 03 or 04. The 04 I have has 100,00 on it . Sending pump went without warning. Dead on the road.
Unless you are pulling alot of weight frequently you won't get your money's worth.. Can buy 2 gasers for the price of a desiel. The new desiels only get 2 mpg more. Both have 300 hp. Though different.... Many desiel sites out there.

The newer the diesel they seem to becoming more complicated the gassers of the same age. The good old days of just a P injection pump, a turbo and a couple of filters to worry about are long past. A Cummins in a GMC or Chev chassis would be a good thing.

i have a 01 dodge 4wd ext.cab 3500,6sp w/cummins, has 355 gears. 197000 miles. truck has to work on farm and interstate too.runs amsoil in all gearboxes and eng.w/amsoil bypass filter system, and a k&n air system, and edgepower system,no problems what so ever. oops i forgot,i did put a water pump on it and a lift pump.has a lift pump warning sensor on it. this lets you know if fuel pressure at pump drops under 4lbs.at the inj.pump($60.spent to save $1800)but this is one opinion, but my 3rd. dodge....

I have an 01 Dodge, I did not know that they had a sensor for low fuel pressure... Is it a light on the dash? I did know that a bad lift pump will kill the injection pump, though... Some people recommend keeping the fuel tank as full as possible, to keep the fuel pressure up...

There"s several aftermarket kits out there....good insurance for when the lift pump goes. Dodge didn"t see the need to protect the $1100 injector pump....

for anybody looking for dodge info try this

I own a 96 Dodge it has been a good truck the 98 threw 02 are 24 valve and the thing is plagued with problems of witch the vp44 pump is a 100k pump or less. 2003 to 2007 common rail 5.9s are great good mileage and dependable. check turbodieselregister.com and see for yourself

Not completely true statement. Just gotta check the fuel pressure. Put a gauge in and you will be fine.

We've always had Fords at work and mostly liked them. Last summer we got our first Chevy with the Duramax/Allison drive train and it is far and away the best truck we have had. We pull large trailers and this truck just PULLS. It will go all day at 74 on cruise control up and down the hills of NY and PA. It is also much quieter and rides better than the Fords. Everyone at work picks it to drive if they have an option. Try to put away your predudice against Chevys and try one. It changed our minds.

Ford does make some good trucks ,but they have had some engine troubles of late and I'd rather not run their experiments for them. Get one with a cummins , but then who knows what will happen since Chrysler was just sold off ? For the amount of dollars these pickup are going for you can just about get a REAL truck from Freightliner,Navistar,Peterbuilt etc. I think they all offer lo-profile models.

Thanks for the replies and feel free to post more. I called the guy that had it for 5 years before. Retired guy, pulled a camper ect. 18mpg driving nice. Said he rebuilt the trans and had frontend work and didn't know anything it needed except reg. maint. Justlooking for a farm truck. Have a 92 F250/460 4x4 auto and looking to update knowing I am not buying a new one. Thought about a v10 Ford but toomany $$ vs dsl, I pull a 24 foot flatbed with hay, old iron, tractors ect. It has 3.55 gears so I hope it would pull good on the interstate. Price is around $14,500 with 128k miles, I don't think it is out of line. I hate payments but want to replace a 15 year old truck. Most comparable Fords and Chevs. are higher. Maybe like my Dad used to say about a milk cow,If you want to know if they are any good buy her and find out!!
