Hello folks, dad just bought himself a new to him truck, and would like to know a little more info on the engine. All it says is 5.8 EFI on the intake maniford. I know 5.8 is 351, but I was wondering if it is a 351M or could it possibly be a 351W?.

Here's one that does not have a power deficit. You could try to talk your old man into it. It is a 1989 351W from a E-250. Edelbrock heads Intake, cam, and Carb, Mac headers, HEI ignition, and a 393 stroker assembly from Coast High Performance. It is currently in the old man's 55 Resto-Mod T-bird.

The stock 351's ran pretty good when new. Perhaps a Jasper reman is in order.

rather weak engine. It does get the job done. I have one in a 97 f350 4x4. It's going good, but you need to open up the exhaust and put a throttle body spacer in it, also a performance air intake to help push the power out.

I agree about that. One with the 351 HO Windsor will scream though. That 4 barrel carb and bigger cam makes a big difference.

this one is fuel injected being a 1994. I know in the Mustang magazines, alot of cars have been upgraded to 351W and with some aftermaret goodies, they make mind blowing power. This is dad's truck, and I know he won't be interested in changing anything. He is of the mindset that squeezing a few extra ponies out of an engine will blow it up, which in this case it might, since it has so many miles on it.

The HO is a completley stock engine with a few factory refinements. I had a 67 Mustang when I was about 18 with a 289 HO and that thing was scarey. The one I have now (351 HO) is in a 1985 four wheel drive truck. It even gets 15 MPG if you stay out of that four barrel.

I looked up the specs and saw it is only rated for 210hp, and this one has 150,000 miles on it. I drove it some today, it is an automatic, 4x4 longbed, ext cab, and wasn't overly impressed with the power with the truck totally empty. Oh well, I think it will outperform the 4.9L 6cyl truck it is replacing.

I like the style of the 92-96 pickups, wish I had a reason to own one... but "only" 210 horsepower? That should be plenty...

We pulled a lot of trailers with a 5.0 in an F-150 (88, 89, 90, and a 96) with no problem. The 88 was an AOD auto, 89 4-speed, 90 5-speed and the 96 E4OD. Sure, we lost a few mph on the hills, but always made it and never broke down.

Power hungry people who think they need to maintain 75 mph going up a 6% grade are the reason new vehicles get such pathetic mileage.

I'm with you, trucks pulling a heavy load should lose speed on big hills. If you aren't willing to lose speed then you need more power but then you need more transmission and axle and frame. If you've upgraded all that you've got more weight so you need more power so you need more transmission, etc its a vicious cycle...
What most trucks really need is more gears. Seems like thats starting to come now.

The problem I see is that too many people are using their 3/4 and 1 ton pickups for pulling things that honestly should have a semi hooked up to them.

More gears is always better - a 13 speed in a pickup would be great!

I've got ideas in my head for putting diesel engines in a variety of older vehicles almost always with a gear splitter... With a 5 spd thats 10 gears and 2 reverse.

I know what you're saying, I saw a couple guys with a Chevy 3500 dually pulling a boat the other day, the boat was massive! I can't believe it was safe, the boat was huge... They were in the slow lane barely making 55mph.

If it"s an EFI engine, it"s a Windsor. It"s been a long time since they made a 351M or Cleveland.

My '96 Dakota has rear anti-lock too and I hate it. Seems like I'd be better off without it entirely. It doesn't seem to help out at all.
