For all those who own an IH 46/47 baler well I can only say good luck. I had mine running great then went over to help a friend bale a small piece if there is a god he sure doesn't look over Balers because everything that could possibly go wrong did.

I ended my day by getting it back to working and also the 47 that my friend has. But I'm sure that there must be a Bad God who looks after people like me and then those those Monkey wrenches in the works now and then.

Walt

PS It has been a long day.

I had a good day at the baler this weekend. I was loading hay and pulled a six foot steel cable with turnbuckles out of a bale. It had gone through the baler and was cut in two by the plunger head, all the while not getting tangled in a thing or causing anythingh to break. I don'nt know how it got into the field. This made up for last year when I broke a knotter drive gear (only a $200.00 part).

First baler that i ran WWWWW AY back when i was a pup and it was NEW back then . That baler taught me how to swear and learn all sorts of new words , how to beat on things to make it work . The local I H mechanic's and i were on a first name basis as i think they spent more time in the field then they did back at the dealership that first season .

I know how you feel. I haven't had any good luck. I put a new sickle in the mower, all new holdowns and wear strips. The mower would just clog up. Got a little bit of hay down and tried to rake it. Rake would not cooperate. (got that one figure out) Then went to bale and the bales would not stay tied. On top of it all, after I cut and raked what little I had down, we got a week and a half of heavy rain. I know how you feel.

 Baler for you in reply to Walt Davies, 07-07-2007 22:34:34

HI Walt;
Sorry to hear of your troubles, those IH47 balers are great machines.
Went to a monthly collective farm machinery sale yesterday, and saw this beauty. Its a JD 244 (?) in totally original condition, had been covered in thin oil after it finished work last year. It made $1150 + sales tax - very cheap I thought. No-one here wants small square balers anymore.
Cheers David

No one wants to bale with them but the horse and small cattle farms sure want them so we keep putting them out and selling at the low rate of $130 ton and the high of $160 ton. At this rate we expect $200 or better this winter. The little 90 lb gal with two horses wants 40 lb bales not 800 to 1200 that she can't move because she doesn't own a big tractor. The bigger outfits with 100 cows are sure happy to get the bigger bales though. I like them for summer feed when i can put them out in the round bale feeder and not worry about rain but come winter I like the smaller bales to feed inside the barn.
Out here in NW Oregon the small bales are doing quite good. In about a week or so I will get some pics of the big bales that are being shipped out of the area. About 200 Million tons of grass straw after the seed has been removed.
