It' s easy to see why Dodges' Cummins is rated as a 'Medium Duty' while the Powerjoke & Diapermax are classified as 'Light Duty' diesels.third party imagethird party image

I have had the Cummins and it's a great engine - but not worth a darn without a good tranny. I now have two Duramax units with the allison (one 5 spd and one 6 spd). The Duramax has been a very good performer and the allison has done well. I pull a gooseneck with a NH190 skid steer and the rig tops 20,000. I have no problems but I don't want to go any heavier with a 3/4 or my 1 ton. My next unit will be a 4500 series becasue of brakes and suspension.

I have a dodge cummins

I tell everyone to buy a ford or chevy.

That way there be one more dodge for me to buy up.

Can't beat the cummins hands down.

Cummins is better than any other diesel.

Any diesel motor is better than gas motor.

Dodge lifetime powetrain warranty.... in reply to city farmer, 07-27-2007 14:56:51
A friend of mine just told me Dodge just came out with a lifetime powertrain warranty. If that is the case they now have the best truck by far! I have been saying they need this for years. It will either totally make them famous or break them. Let the chips fall where they may. Ford and Chevy are not going to like that at all. They like to ignore you when you say, why did this break for no reason? or why was this thing built so cheap? Maybe now they will have to answer for all the junk and we will finally not have to shell out big bucks for frivalous transmission repairs on these vehicles all the time.

LOL --

So much for it's relevance here -- from Dodge's website:

"See dealer for a copy of limited warranty and details. Non-Transferable. Not available on SRT, Diesel vehicles, Sprinter, Ram Chassis Cab, and certain fleet vehicles."

I saw that on tv the other day. Wonder what the fine print in that warranty looks like. Knew some one years ago that got some for-in job for the 100,000 mile warranty. They found out the hard way there were way too many hoops to jump for it to be worth it.

Hauling that kind of weight, how about something with more brakes, heavier tires & stronger suspension/frame than a 3/4 or one ton. GMC has those TopKick 4500 & 5500 units in 4x4.

What nearly everyone else said. Right now I've got an '05 Dodge/Cummins and the NV5600 6-speed. I bought it for the engine....don't need or want a V-8 or an auto as my left leg still works and I don't want the 'brain' deciding what gear I should be in.

I have always been a ford fan and have a 250 with a 6.9 and over 300 thousand on it. I do prefer the cummins motor and in an automatic the allison. Ford does put the cummins motor in front of the allison auto in their medium duty trucks.

Simple, Ford has the best truck, and Dodge is using the best diesel currently being put in pickups. V8 diesels have never cut it in my books.

Now, if GM hadn't nickled and dimed it's pickup to death over the past 20 years and gone with a inline 6 Deere, like they could have and should have, it would have been a whole different ball game. I've had 6,000lbs in the bed of my 78 and 86 Chevy's many times and all that ever gave me cause for concern were the tires.

It took a little getting used to.

They've replaced the oil pressure and volt meter gauges with the idiot lights and in their place mounted turbo boost pressure and trans temp gauges. Just not at all practical for a simple farm truck. :>(

Had to spend $155 on it already and order an outside temperature readout mirror. Miss seeing that temp every morning! :>)

I prefer the Dodge for the simple reason of the Cummins engine. My brother has a 98 5-speed and an 06 6-speed. The 98 will do 20mpg easily, sometimes as high as 24, and will pull a 25' trailer loaded with hay on a short haul and still make 17mpg.

The 06 has been averaging around 17mpg so far, but it is long from being broke-in.

If you like the Ford, but want a Cummins... check out fordcummins.com

My ideal would be the Cummins in a Ford.

Since that wasnt and still isn't available, I opted for the Dodge. '03, high output, long cab, long bed, SRW, NV5600 with a Jake) I'll admit to having not being real impressed with the durability of the front end. U-joint on the left front axle went at 38k. They had to destroy the hub/bearing asssembly to change that out, so I got a new bearig on that side. RF axle U-joint went at 80k. They were able to get the hub and bearing away on that job and save it, but the bearing eventually shelled out at 102k (just out of the extended warranty I'd bought!). Had a u-joint go in the rear drive shaft at 98k, and since it was a warranty job, they replaced the whole durned shaft.

So the running gear has been the only problem. It was worth it to pay for the extended warranty, just for the cost on tht and I have to admit that, except for when the right front bearing went, I never got alid up for any length of time for any of the repairs.

And I love that Cummmins. It's been trouble free, and pulls anything I ask it to without complaint (behind a six-speed handshaker). Ford cab ameneties are a little nicer but those in the Dodge are perfectly adequate. Ford hasn't had the problems with the front end that the Dodges have, but on balance, no more than the Dodge problems have inconvenienced me, I'll go for another Cummins if I ever wear this one out. I haven't heard of any problems with the new Cummins 6.8. Certainly nothing like when Ford/Navistar brought out the 6.0.

There is! Buddy of mine did this instead of replacing the Stroke that would have cost his much for a crate motor installed. He did most of the work himself in less than two weekends.

I see a lot of diesel pickups out there that get worked hard and standup to the punishment that are GM, Dodge, and Ford, so...

I own two Cummins Dodges, and my only bitc. is the automatic transmissions behind the Cummins engines. If I were to get a new one, and I"d have to take a hard look closer look at the Dodge before buying one, it"d definately be with a manual transmission like I always had before these two. One"s a "96 and one"s an "02, and they both have reliable Danas under them. Dodge quit using Dana axles in either "03 or "04 for some cheaper cost job out of Korea. I don"t know about their reliability, but whenever costs are cut for profit, reliability usually suffers.

As far as GMs or Fords go...I aint got one, so I can"t rightly knock them. Good luck...none are cheap.

if gm or ford went to a REPUTABLE engine manufacturer (such as mack or john deere, rather than navistar or izuzu) and bought an inline six diesel that was stone axe reliable, i would reconsider my choice of the dodge/cummins.

I thought I read somewhere that "izuzu" was the second largest manufacturer of diesels in the world. I would think that would make them reputable. Aren't they the people that make the Duramax? Maybe I am wrong on both items. My dad has a Duramax and it does everything that we have needed it to do. I guess if we need to haul something more than the pickup will handle, we get the Freightliner!!
