My 1995 chevy 6.5 diesel is acting up again. I have to crank it for about 10 seconds before it will start, then it runs for less than 10 seconds stumbles and dies. I changed the fuel filter, it was kinda black, but still the same problem. I don't know if this is related, but I noticed a week or two ago that when I first turn the key to the run position, the glow plug light on the dash no longer lights up, there was a clicking noise that accompanied the glow plug light and I no longer hear it.

First thing to do is open the fuel cap and see if you have vacuum in the tank. If so get a new cap or drill a small hole in it to allow air in. Second is to check for voltage at the lift pump which is under your feet inside the frame rail... where the fuel filter on a similar gas model would be. It opperates as such, key to on and it primes the injection pump (IP) then goes off until there is oil pressure. Mine seems to go off as soon as the glow light goes out. Once there is oil pressure it runs constantly until there is no more. Even after key is turned to off it should run for a second or two until the oil pressure sensor reads zero. I think you have a common problem and either a relay, fuse, or bad oil pressure sending unit. I suggest registering at gm-diesel.com, it is free and very helpful!

It's more than likely the pump modual driver. PMD is a black box mounted on inj. pump. I bought one for my 2000 model from Heath Diesel that's warranted for 7 years. Also PMD needs to be mounted outside of engine compartment so it will stay cooler! Tx Jim

A quick check with a scan tool will tell you if the glow plug relay is being commanded "ON", and if it is actually responding, and feeding current to the glow plugs. The 'puter actually monitors the GP voltage.

As for the stalling, suspect the frame-mounted electric lift pump, and the oil pressure switch that operates it.

Another thought... sometimes the fuel heater shorts and blows a fuse. Seems to me that MAY affect the operation of the glow plug relay or the fuel pump. I'm suffering from crs, but it seems to me when the fuel heater shorts, it takes another function down with it.

I cant help with the glow plug problem but if you still have your cat. converter it could be stopped up. I have a 94 6.5 turbo the cat stopped up on it and it wouldnt run. Removed the cat and muffler, left the straight pipe only, it has more power than when new and it has 320,000 on it. Check at the exhaust to see if your getting anything while someone else is trying to crank it.

Good luck, Randy

It should not be that PMD module. I replaced it not very long ago, along with a heat sink to help keep it cooler.

Sounds like maybe a bad glowplug relay could be part of the problem, but that shouldn't make it stumble and die..those motors have too much electronics on them for my taste..diesel is supposed to be simple :) My BIL's 6.5 gave him one too many sensor/electronic problems,we pulled it out and dropped in a throttle body 350..problem solved
