Grandson inherited a JD 3020 deisel that hasn't been started in 7 years but has been kept in a shed. What does he need to do before attempting to start it?

Before doing all the good ideas listed below I would check for hornets!

Its sounds like you speak from experience! An excellent idea. I can't let any machine sit around my place for more than a few weeks without getting hornets in them. They've been really bad this year.

Make sure you can turn the motor a few turns by hand and if all is well spin it over a few turns with the fuel shut off. (unhook the electic to the punp or pull out stop knob) Then go ahead and fire it up. This said, if you can roll it by hand after all these years the parts are not so dry as to hurt anything.

you may consider popping the injectors out to crank it to build oil pressure and you also can oil cylinders as well this way and you can purge the fuel system of old nasty fuel this way too I would consider adding 2 cans of seafoam to 10 gals of fresh fuel to clean system out as well + I would keep close eye on filters ( fuel) you may want to keep a couple of extra sets on hand and change them again after 10 hours or so bacause the may be full of junk and check fuel tank for algee as well you may have to have tank cleaned if you have algee in it from sitting .

Watch the oil pressure very closely. Carbon in the oil will settle out and can lock up the oil pump and other parts. Happened to me on a Cat 955. Sheared the oil pump drive as soon as it fired the first time.

I would try to pressurize the oil gallery with motor oil. Seven years is a long time for the mains and rods to go dry. I did this once with a dozer, used an air operated barrel pump. A dry start is not good.

first change all the fluids, drain and clean the fuel system may just wipe the tank clean i use a flexable sneaky pete use the grabbers to hold a shop towel and wipe the tank clean replace the filters and fluids should be good to go
