I can"t decide if I should cut what little grass has built up and hope that by October there is some rain and cut again or just let what is there continue (hopefully) to build up and cut it all in October.

I am going to be in a desparate situation this winter for hay so I need to maximize my opportunity.

Any suggestions would be helpful. thanks

Be thnakful you have grass to worry about. In my part of Mo. the farmers will be feeding hay in another couple of weeks due to the drought.

Everybody talks about the weather but no one does anything about it;-) The Lex. area finished last year over 7 inches Above normal which had to have helped some with this drought. That didn't help in 1999 when we had the bigger drought. October is historically a fairly dry month here in central Ky, it's a gamble either way. I'm going to have to wait for a second cutting. Would be nice to get some widespread rain for more than an hour or so.

What should we do about drought? A rain dance maybe? Last years rain does very little for this years crop. A hurricane might blow across before long and make hay. I have put up grass hay up in November and it is fine. I have had enough rain here lately, but hay production overall is down by 20% at least. The spring was dry and the late freeze really hurt my early hay. Have a good crop of tobacco though.

"A rain dance maybe?"-- No, thank you.

"Last years rain does very little for this years crop"--Soooo, if we started this year 7 inches Below normal, this drought would not have been much worse? We started 1999 with over 4 inches Below, had a worse drought than this one, and a lot more than grass died; trees, shrubs, hasn't got that bad yet. Cleaned 3 ponds out that year, they all have 'some' water this year.

The neighbor and I were just talking the other day about it (I let him have the hay off my place)It is not worth the diesel right now to put it up so we are going to wait another month. With the heat coming again this week I sure hope that we get more rain after that. If you do take it off now with the heat and no rain - well you know what happens. Good luck.
