I recently bought an old Ford ,I think it is a 9N,but,there is no serial # all worn off,where # should be, its a 3 speed but the dip stick to check the trans ,hyd,rear end,is located on top of the trans case right next to the fill plug , also it has the I beam radius rods, My 2nd problem is that the gear shift had a spring attached to it and than attached to a bolt on top of the case I guess to put tension on it,when I took off the spring and moved the tractor in neutral the gear shift jumped all over the place,sounds like it was hitting gears every where,can any one tell me what might be the problem from this description,thanks in advance for any help on these to subjects,

Soundguy is right. With the dipstick on the top of the trans, it's an early 9N. Here are some clarifying questions to help you determine just how early and/or rare it might be:

1. Is the dash and/or trans cover cast iron or cast aluminum?
2. Where is the starter button? On the top of the trans at the base of the steering column? Or up on the dash, left side?
3. Do the fenders have 1 horizontal ribs or 2?
4. Are the rear wheels 28" or 32"?
5. Is the hood made of stamped steel or cast aluminum?

If the hood is aluminum, you've hit paydirt. Only about 800 tractors got aluminum hoods and most of those didn't survive because they were rather brittle.

A starter button on the dash would indicate an early 9N. 32" wheels are more rare and so are double rib fenders.

Really appreciate the inf from all,I checked the tractor for the tips provided and here is what I found , the trans cover is aluminium,nothing else,the starter button is on top of the trans cover,and the fenders have 1 horizontal rib,28" tires and the hood is steel,again thanks to Jim.UT and to Soundguy,the information is invaluable.will most likely be usefull to others.

Sounds like an "ordinary" 9N. Probably a 1941 or 1942. I forgot to provide this link before. It helps date these machines if you can't read the s/n.

Sounds like an early 9n.. I'd check for any aluminum sheetmetal or castings. including the round side covers and steering pedistal... might be worth something to a collector.. etc..

As for the spring.. yep.. it's probably to keep it from jumping out of gear.. Might be a worn shifter pattern, bad detends.. etc..

pop her open for a looksee ( gotta take steer box top and sheet metal off though.. ARGH!! )
