What kind of tractor should we get?

Hello,

I'm new to the forum, so thanks in advance for any help you can offer. My dad has property, about 10 acres of which are grass field and brush. I usually mow the 2 acres of grass with a ride on, but we're looking for something to possibly reclaim the brush. Would it make sense to purchase a tractor to reclaim the fields and maintain the grass?

If so, what's the best choice. I'd like to have the following characteristics:

-inexpensive for its class

-big enough to handle brushhog
-relatively easy to find parts

Thanks again for your help

A little late to the discussion but...

If you are only dealing with 10 acres, I would recommend hiring someone to brush hog it. I would then burn it off and pick up the rocks.

Then buy a commercial mower. You can mow 10 acres in a morning with a good commercial mower. Keep it finish mowed and you will save alot of hassle.

Look in the Sunday classified ads and also try to find your state farm bulletin. The farm bulletin might be online in your state. Lots of tractor ads in them.

I spent a lot of time over the years bushhogging with a Ferguson TO30. Great tractor for the money and way over built. Only thing is I don"t like is once in a blue moon a stick will fly out of the mower and get my in the back. I have been using a Farmall M with a 3 point to bushhog this summer and it sits a lot higher so the stick problem hasn"t been so far but may be overkill for 10 acres. Dads Ferggy was rebuilt totally front to back in the mid 70s and we have only had to put on a couple mufflers, knocked off the fuel shut off knob once and one manifold since then and it was used hard. Not a bad service record! It is still in great shape!

I agree with Walt. Don't buy a 50 year old tractor unless you like working on tractors. Are you going to haul it around? If so tractors over 5000 lb or so take alot more to move. I would look for a 40 to 50 horsepower 1958 or newer with a wide font end and 3 point hitch. Many older tractors have no 3 point and you won't be able to use modern implements with it. Tractors this size can be pulled out if stuck by another tractor or large truck. You don't need Patton's Army to pull it if it gets stuck , but it's big enough if your friend buries his truck on your property you can pull him out without getting stuck too. If you get a gasoline motor it will start easier and generally is easier to repair and to get fuel for. (All gas stations have gas). If you get a diesel motor you'll have a little more power and fuel economy. I prefer Gas myself but most folks prefer the diesel. I would look at a Massey Ferguson 135 , 165 or 175. Depending on condition will run 4 to 10 thuosand. However and unlike cars and trucks , with proper care and storage that tractor will outlive all of us. 30 years is not a real old tractor. Most cars that age are junk. Look at them on ebay. Its a great way to see whats available without buying or driving all over the country. Alot of people report the price here to see what others think before buying it. I guess that is helpful. I also agree I would stick to old line names and stay away from Belarus etc. "Offbrands". Good luck. Let us know what you buy.

Thanks for your help everyone. I think it will come down to what we can find in the area. Good to have options though.

Any of the Farmall letter series tractors are easy to find parts for, or the letter series John Deere's are not too hard to get parts for.

Massey 135.

Diesel is best, but gassers are fine. Ford 3000 is in the same power class, do not know much about it though.

Make sure you have a dealer in your area for whatever model you chose.

Good Luck

Aaron

Buy whatever you can easily get parts or service for. That means dealer nearby. A good dealer will recomend just what you need. I'd just stay away from these new brands,Branson,Montana,Mahindra etc. Not saying they aren't any good, just consider where you'll get parts a few years from now when they go the way of Deutz,Zetor,Belarus.....

The only bad thing that I see with these batteries is the $150 to $180 cost.

Buying an old tractor for doing daily chores is not very practical, I would look into a newer one about late 70s to early 90s that is in good condition and low hours. These tractors are almost always diesels and have better parts supplies. I have an 86 Case Orchard model that is quite nice for doing brush hogging it can get into small places under low limbs an turn on a dime with 9 cents change. They run from about 5 to 9,000 but you get a good tractor that will last a long time without a lot of work.
Buying an old 40s or 50s tractor and you will spend most of your time looking for parts its nice if you want one to show off at tractor shows and such but not really practical for daily use.
I also have two Kubota tractors with buckets and they are nice for using around the farm but are light tractors and will tip easily if not on level ground.

Bought a Massey 135 diesel to use on similar property.Parts are readily available and inexpensive.
I would suggest taking some time to look at what is available in your area and price range.Better to spend a few extra $$$ for a tractor in good shape than to buy one that needs alot of work.

Nobody has said the Farmall B or C. Parts are all over, but no 3pt or live PTO, but I would think that one and an overrunning coupler would do the job just fine.

If you want training on being a mechanic get a N model Ford.If you want cheap power that will eat a N ford for lunch that hardly ever gives a problem get a WD Allis Chalmers. They usually sell for $500 to $1000 ready to go and with the hand clutch it gives them the same thing as live PTO.Also get a pull type bush hog not a mounted one they're safer for the inexperienced and easy to hook and unhook

Get a 9n or 8n ford. I just got done brushogging a 20 acre wheat stubble field with my 9n. It was running a 5 foot JD brushog. We sprayed all the weeds with roundup and I mowed it down to about 4 inches high. Did a nice job and took me about 8-10 hours of total mowing. The fords are the cheapest, most basic, simple to find parts for machine that was ever made. Also very low and stable if you have some small ditches to mow. Get an overunning coupler and go to mowing. Good luck.

Any Massey tractor with a Continental or Perkins engine except a 130. 130's are pretty rare anyway. The Perkins 3 cylinder diesel is the cream of the crop but the Perkins and Continental gas are very good engines as well. A live PTO is best for bush hog. First choice would be a 135, 150, 230, 245, 240 as they are a little more refined and would have a direct injection Diesel which starts a little easier in winter and has slightly better fuel economy. An older 35 or 50 would be worth looking at. You could also look at the next size up like a 165, 255, 175, 265 or 65. Lots of parts available and reasonably priced to boot. Agco Heritage parts are even available which meet all the specs but are 50 to 75% cheaper than standard parts. Dave

What your asking for fits a very good number of tractors. 8N ford, Farmall H Allis WD, Oliver 77 ad the list goes on and on. All depends on how much you can do for your self as far as working on one

8n ford or jubilee if you are looking for cheap simple power, no fancy doodads like powersteering.

John Deere 1020 or the lot newer 2150 tractor if you're looking for a bit heavier and more avail. of parts and reliability. Most expensive though (8000 + -)

International 424, 384, 300/350 utility, 404 are good old tractors as well.

You will definitely need a utility tractor capable of a 5 foot brush hog (30-45hp). Best manufacturer of 3pth. B/Hs is WOODS.
