Have an 89 Ford F350 with a 351 in it. Truck has rub great all summer until now. On a cold morning 40 or below, you really have to grind on it. The engine is firing off and on. It will eventually will start and run great for the day. If you advance the timming it will start. Have changed the harmonic balancer think the timming degree's moved. Tried that and re timmed it to specs and there no diffrence. Put a fuel pressure gage on it and everything is in spec. Injectors are pulsing and working properly. Changed that little module on the distributor and still no luck. Only thing i can think off is there atimming asdvance in the distibutor that could be screwed up??? Or am I missing something else.

Isn't there a coolant temperature sensor that tells the ECM to richen the mixture? Like what used to be lthe choke? Maybe this needs checking.

Sounds like you 've covered the basics . Advancing the timing might be an indication of timing chain being off tooth or two ? Check slack in chain .Dirty injectors or carbon build up on valve could also hurt some. But I think I'd take close look at the timing chain .

Check the fuel pressure regulator. Better yet, just replace it. My '86 got hard to start (woudn't start) and after destroying a couple starters and hydraulic locking the engine to the point of doing piston and ring damage it was found that the regulator diaphragm had split and was filling the engine through the vacuum lines. That particular truck (302 V-8) the first year fuel injected had no secondary fuel filter so the pump could keep the injector rail pressure up while delivering all the excess fuel to the vacuum lines. Cost me a truck.

Call your local Ford dealer and ask for part # F2PZ-9F939-A (idle air bypass service kit).Clean the throttle bore and install kit(has instructions) and problem should go away.Fixed a few Fords with same problem.

Oh and set the timing back to factory spec. You're unplugging the spout connector when setting timing aren't you? ~brad

If it stals at stops etc. also check the IAC valve (idle air control)

Have the battery checked on a good load test meter. I just went through this with a 3208 CAT,grind and grind, two new battterys and it fires right off.

I'd run a compression test on that engine.

Advancing the timing/helps the starting is a dead giveaway that perhaps we are getting a little low on wind.

Just thinking out loud here,

Allan
