Has anyone on here ever changed a starters rotation. I have a CW rotation starter and I need it to be CCW rotation. It is a very good starter and I really want to avoid buying another $300 starter when I have this one and it fits, but it is just the wrong rotation.

Any have any experience in changing the rotation of a starter.

you can change direction of a starter two ways by switching direction of current flow in eather the feild or armature not both or rotating the brush holders 90 Deg. witch will do same thing . I have done this many times . getting the bendex to work in the wrong direction might be fun or next to impossible . it would be cheaper to buy $300 than to convert one for job time is money .

I would think that by the time you spent the money to change it, you could have bought that $300 starter. Whats wrong the with right one?

In order to change the direction of a typical series DC Starter Motor the orientation of the field windings relative to the armature needs swapped i.e. if the field windings end/terminations were swapped relative to the armature (or vice versa) then it will turn the opposite direction. This involves high current connections and proper attachment n soldering and usualy requires a starter shop. Also if it uses a centrifugal bendix type of starter drive that needs changed in addition. Finally if the brushes are offset at any angle (like many generators are) they may need attention prior to reversal but if they are straight down against the commutator they should still be okay..... ..... .....

BOTTOM LINE you need to go to a good old fashioned Mom n Pop genny n starter repair shop IFFFFF any still exisit in your area and they can tell you if its physically possible (due to mechanical constraints like bendix n fields etc etc) even though in theory it can be done.

The rotation can be changed easy then get left hand bendix.

Won"t he need a new armature with groves in the end of shaft in opposite direction? Think this is a job for a good starter rebuilld shop.

any good starter guy can make it turn either way. The issue you have, though, is you have to change the drive out to the correct one. If it is spinning backwards the bendix won't ever engage the flywheel.

More information would help. You do run into that where the same brand/model starter is used where the starter lays along side the engine or plugs in from the rear. Most can be changed by swapping in the correct armature with the correct commutator to winding offset. That way you get the correct drive splines on the shaft. You also need a drive set up for reverse rotation. I have reversed several by going to the tractor salvage yard and dug through the pile of starter parts to find an armature with opposite comutator to winding offset. If your lucky, this armature will also have the correct drive attached.
