I just found a M4000 with 4700 hours. He put new injectors, battery, front tires, and glowplugs on the tractor. Is there anything that I should be aware of about this tractor when I look at it? Any weak points? Also, does anyone know if parts are still available for this tractor? He is asking $4000, does that sound like a far price?

I went and took a look at it Saturday. The guy hasn't started it since June and when we got there I had to put a new battery in for the guy. Almost started when we first tried but didn't. We had to use starting fluid to get it started. There was a heavy blue/white smoke but got much clearer after awhile. Someone I talked to said, that would be expected from a diesel that has been sitting for a few months. Is this true?
On the right side of the engine, I believe its the injector pump, (don't know what one looks like) There was diesel seeping out between the top plate. and about every 4 seconds it would drip onto the block. Is that a sign that its time for a rebuild job or is something just loose?
I offered him $3000 but the lowest he would go was $3200. It needs new rear tires, which will cost me $610. He has my number and said if he changes his mind, he would call me. Am I digging myself into a hole with this tractor?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I have a M 4000 which was beat to death in a chicken house and it is still ticking.. I reccomend it highly. The air cleaner is behind the grill in the front of the tractor and it takes a dry element. I would check it and look in the bottom of the filter housing and see if it has rust or whatever in it, but this is minor. See if power steering and 3ph hydraulics work ok. Can't tell about price without seeing it , but sounds like a good price to me.
