Briggs Stratton Seized?

I have a snapper lawn mower with a v-twin briggs on it. It is next to brand new, but is 4-5 years old. I got it when my Grandpa died. I used it this summer and now it will not turn over and the starter clicks and is trying to do something. I have completely charged the battery and it is good. I cannot even pull the cord to turn the motor. I pulled the plugs and still it will not turn over. I am guessing it is seized, or rusted somehow. I sprayed some wd40 in it to no avail. The pistons are on their sides so not much wd stays in the chamber. What is my next step?

Did you park it last time, and now it's stuck? Or did it start acting up in the field, you got it home, and now it's stuck?

If it's the first case, it was fine and now is stuck, it's most likely something mechanical. From a nut dropped down by a squirrel blocking a valve or piston to something in the fan shroud. Moisture lockup is possible as well, but not as likely. Unless you've parked it in the rain with the air filter off. These are all pretty easy fixes with minimal costs.

If it's the latter, it was running badly and brought home, it's much more likely oil starvation. Could also be overheating. Remarkable how well mice block out the air passages with fluff. The repair cost is normally quite high, making engine replacement more worthwhile. If it's an overheated seizure, you might get by with just a piston and ring replacement.

Couple possibilites.

Remove the cover over the flywheel.

The starter gear may be jammed in the ring gear. You should be able to see it, and if this is the problem, rotate the engine backwards a little to see if it frees, If not, you may have to remove the starter.

OR, it could be the ignition coils that are right next to the flywheel. V-twin has 2. If it sits long enough, the flywheel can rust enough that the coils get stuck to it. They"re only a business card thickness away from it. Doesn"t take much to get them loose, but the starter isn"t strong enough to do the job. Remove the coils, sand off the rust, and reset the coils in place. a business card between the coil legs and the flywheel magnets should work.

Also, in the late summer and fall, mice like to move in to small engines and make a nest near the flywheel and coils also. They can stuff enough stuff in there to jam things up, especially if any of the nest material go into the starter gear and ring gear on the flywheel.

Check the oil, pull the dipstick. does it have oil? If not, the rods are seized to the crank. Time for a new shortblock.

From my experience its a lot cheaper to just go get a new lawn mower than to try an repair the old one.
I have the service from Sears on mine and they put $3000 in repairs last summer on $1200 mower.

Check and make sure the starter gear has not got in a bind in the flywheel. Take all the belts and clutch off and find out if the clutch bearing is frozen up. I would isolate the engine from the rest of the tractor, take off the flywheel cover and see if anything has got bound up in the flywheel.

Where do I begin on this? THis is a rear engine snapper and the friction wheel on the bottom is not in contact with anything. I guess I take off the top cover of the motor?

If it is on a RER, then it is all mechanical under there. Take off the top cover, and see if the start is stuck in flywheel, or one of the coils might have came loose.

Does it have a blade or engine type brake?

You said it had oil. Is it over full? I have seen gas run in some engines and fill the crank case up to where they are locked up. Check that first.
