Hey guys, just a quickie question. I recently had a bit of a problem with water entering the hydraulics of my JD 400 backhoe. Problem has been fixed and i drained all of the old fluid i can get to. Asked my father to pick up a bunch of oil while he was out. Well in order to save a few bucks he came back with "coastal" brand hydraulic oil. I"m a bit wary of putting this no name oil in there. Anyone have any experience positive or negative????
Thanks

I used an off brand in my Super C Farmall and it would hardly lift. I went to the Case -International dealer and bought 5 gallon HY-TRAN and used it and then the lift was fast and worked fine. They all may be fine but thats what worked for me.

buickanddeere you better clone that Grand National if it can run 12's in 1/4 mile and get 30+ MPG. That's INCREDIBLE or unbelievable! Tx Jim

I was responsible for writing the specifications and selecting the vendor for hydraulic oil for White tractors back in the late 80's. All Hydraulic oil is not the same. Some of the off brand oil left some of the necessary additives out either by accident or on purpose which resulted in poor performance such as foaming, peeling the paint from the insides of all the castings or prematurely plugging the hydraulic filters. Off brand hydraulic oil can be as good as the tractor manufacturer's oil or it can be of poorer quality. Another thing, hydraulic oil that is almost clear is made from Grade 2 base stock which is better quality than the dark brown hydraulic oil. The additive package does not turn the oil dark brown. You will be money ahead in the long run if you buy hydraulic oil from Deere, AGCO, or Mobil.

Coastal is a trade name of Warren -
Link

You can check there and see if what you got meets the appropriate Deere specs. The only thing special about the JD fluid is the price.

I use Walmart oils in all my stuff never had anything fall apart or blowup yet.

Just use what ever factory specs fit your tractor.
It just take one guy to put oil from an off brand in his tractor and have trouble with the tractor and then blame it on the oil and next thing you know the whole darn company is making crap that will ruin everything you put it in. Well if that is the case then why don't they get sued by all these high powered lawyers who are just waiting for someone to make a small mistake so they can make Millions.

Does it say it meets John Deere "specs"? Most commonly available "UTF" DOES, and most likely will be just fine in your tractor.

Wet clutch??? Either i"m going nuts or i don"t know as much about this tractor as i think i do. The clutch looked pretty darned dry when i had this machine split just a sort time ago. Does have a reverser though. It"s only going to see limited use "around the house" so i"m guessing it should be fine . Bring on the snow!!!

The brake linings run in oil.As does the high low shift and reverser is so equiped. Try the cheapo non wet-clutch oil and you will be back here wondering. Why the brakes grab & growl? Then wanting to know why hydraulic functions quit operating.

If it doesn't say "wet clutch compatible", it isn't. Ask Dad if he has saved enough $$$ on the bargain oil for a $10,000 transmission overhaul?

Thanks Dave. It's good to be back home, caring for the live stock, on the tractor then growling at guys like this topic starter who thinks his tractor is "dry". I hope he has deep pockets or he doesn't sell it after wrecking it to some poor unsuspecting smuck.

Geez, don't get so touchy, you said "wet clutch" and i immediatly thought of the clutch directly between the engine and tranny which is definatly dry, we all don't have the inherent knowledge of tractor systems that you do. I am well aware that the brakes are bathed in oil. I'm doing my best not to fudge things all up on this tractor and if i were to sell it i can assure you that i wouldn't be unloading it on "some poor schmuck" I'm not some dink who sells busted crap, i'm just a guy with a tractor and a simple question.

scooter,

Don't pay him no mind! Any man that drives a Buick has to be old....at least around here, all you see is crusty old farts in a damned Buick...GM's UGLIEST car! Half of them are in a walking coma and the other half have blue hair....or no hair. They base everything they know on what 'dad' did back in '39, '49, '59....and maybe 1969. Dad bought a jug of Slicko oil down at the Montgomery-Wards, poured it in his 1923 Rumley and the damned thing finally blew up. They've blamed Slicko Oil ever since.

Odds are I'm younger than you and my Buick is a mildly hopped up Grand National. You can likely remember 1st hand the Cuban Missile crisis and JFK getting wasted. The GN still runs 12's in the 1/4 anytime, seats five in comfort, has decent trunk space and will break 30mpg on trips. Has 290,000 miles on the original bottom end. I purchase either Mobil 1, Amsoil or JD oil. I'm cranky enough to walk around with a blood hemoglobin level of 53.

It all comes from the same pipeline, just different names on the jugs along with different prices. some have differnt additives but I think it hurts more than good to have too many additives n there, I work with a guy that uses Sams club hydraulic fluid and never has had a problem with any of it.
