Hi, we are visiting the threshermen's reunion next summer and having difficulty finding any accommodation anywhere near to Austin, MB. Has anyone any suggestions either B&B or Motels or Hotels?
Thanks.
Trina

The reply from KRUSSI is quite accurate. Portage La Praire is the nearest town with decent accomodations. The hotels mentioned are decent. Portage is about 45 miles east of Austin. the highway between Austin and Portage is a 4 lane divided highway so travel is usually not an issue.

Brandon is a little further away and has a good selection of hotels to fit all budgets. As I live in the area I have no reason to search for Portage or Brandon hotels on the net but a google search should bring them up. Brandon is about 60 miles west of Austin and the highway is 4 lane as well.

Rural western Manitoba is not heavily populated and hotels in the small towns have a difficult time keeping the doors open. Particularly since drinking and driving laws got tougher. So there is no hotel in Austin and a small motel (motor hotel) in McGregor (about 15 miles east of Austin). I have never been in the McGregor motel so I can not give you any advise on it. Usually these small town motels are not that great. The McGregor motel is also fairly close to Number 1 Highway which has a fair volume of heavy truck traffic day and night which may bother you.

Portage and Brandon offer a better selection of restaurants and other services than do the small towns around the Manitoba Agricultural Museum.

I usually am in the grain elevator during the reunion so if you get a chance drop by and say hello.

Better half and I went there last year- only 2-3 hours from Winnipeg. Left Winnipeg in the AM, visited the AC museum at Portage La Prairie, and the Austin show later that day. Plenty of places to stay in Winnipeg, very nice city. Made for a nice first trip to Canada.

Much as I like Winnipeg, I wish to point out that by the time you get from anywhere in Winnipeg to the site of the Austin reunion most of two hours will be gone. There is much to see and do at Austin, but it is a long day and usually really hot. Portage La Prairie is your first choice: it has at least 3 good hotels (new Super Eight, Canadinn amd Day's Inn). That gets you within a half hour of Austin. Your second best bet is Brandon, Manitoba which is an hour west of Austin and has hotels to no end.

Thanks for your comments and will definitely check out hotels/motels you mention in Portage. Looking forward to the show as i'm sure it will be something different to what we have here.
