There is someone who posts on the acmoc board (antique caterpillar) think his handle is 98J on that one, and it's great to see the photos of the various activities spring/fall, on those hill sides with Mt. Hood in the background.

Kind of different to see the older caterpillar crawlers pulling the equipment, with the track pads all shined up from working, and the photos with the expansive hillsides, tillage, planting, harvesting, etc., great photos !

Pretty close Dan, should be S of the Columbia River and probably W of Shanako. Looks to be almost due S of The Dalles.

Always like the view of Mt.Hood looking back west.

That's an easy one its SW Washington on the Columbia river with Mount Hood in Oregon in the back ground.
Walt

Yeppers Walt, deffinantly Mt.Hood in the back ground. Usually We have great view of Hood, but smaller as I'm approxmately 120m farther east. They plant and combine peas here on hills sides like that, foothills of the Blue Mountains. I don't care how many times I see them running on "the edge" still amazes me.

A later post in that forum identified it as Wasco County- in Oregon, south of the Columbia, a bit east of the Cascades. It's a "rain shadow"- weather comes from the west, and all the rain gets wrung out of the clouds over the mountains- so very low rainfall, hence low yields, in the 30 bushel range. Takes probably 5000 acres to make a living, and that is probably getting tough with the higher costs of inputs these days. So steep they use "hillside" combines- body of the combine is on a heavy shaft that runs the length of the machine, with weights and sensors that keep it level while the running gear follows the contour.

that is truely awesome!

How does that combine turn itself to perpendicular to the horizon and not to the field?

That's what I was wondering. How does that work? I've never used a combine, and never seen a modern one up close either.
