When you polarize a regulator, does it tell the charging system whether you have a negative or positive ground?

I have a new regulator that has a P/N on the bottom. With my limited experience I can only recall seeing a regulator labeled either positive or negative ground. This is a new regulator.

actually you are polarizing the generator, not the regulator.

Congratulations, You pretty well have it correct. When you polarize you impart a certain correct North/South residual Magnetic Polarity in the iron field poles so when the armature rotates inside it the correct corresponding Electrical +/-polarity is present to match your battery i.e. if the system is Pos or Neg ground..... .. Some VR's are bi polar and work at either polarity while others may not.
