We switched to JD "Plus 50 full synthetic 0W-40" oil last year and have been very happy with it. The part # for a 5 gal pail is TY 24351.

The Deere site clearly states the oil is "full-synthetic" but the container label--same part number-- clearly says "semi-synthetic". Anyone know anything about this?

Maybe we got an earlier version of the oil but one or the other of these labels is wrong and I don't know which one. The part number seems to be the same for both. Any ideas on this? [/i]

OK, here's what I did. I sent an e-mail to John Deere corporate and was surprised to get an e-mail back on a Sunday. Fellow working from home. I explained the situation and he said ALL that oil was FULL synthetic.
I e-mailed back and explained I know that but the container SAYS SEMI-synthetic and which is correct? He e-mailed back to ask the dealer.
Now, I have two nice dealers but they don't even know they have the oil, so I ordered some 5W-40 Turbo/Diesel Mobil One from WalMart. It's supposedly the same as Delvac 5W-40 synthetic and is turbo diesel rated with the top testing CI or whatever numbers. Way over what my turbo JD calls for. Paid $4.50 a quart at WalMart and I felt lucky to get it. These synthetic oils are the greatest and is the future.
Sure wish I could have figured out the John Deere thing.

Dan: I am running the JD 50 Plus 0W40 in my diesel engines. I am 100 per cent happy. I have also sent the oil in to blackstone labs after I taken it out, and the results are great. I have it in my 88 F-50 7.3, my JD 4400. I also run it in my little 318. The 7.3 which is a bit hard to start cranks much better with the 0W40 than the Rotella 15W40. The 0W is thinner when it is cold, yet when hot is the same as the 15W40. As you know, you should not run Regular Mobile 1 in your diesel engines. I run that in my Oldsmobile intrigue (186k miles).

Thanks for your comments but here are some surprising updates.

A 5 gallon pail of JD 0W-40 sythetic costs $90.--- $4.50 per qt.

Mobil Delvac 5W40 synthetic for FOUR gallons costs $114---7.12 per qt

Six quarts of Mobil 1 5W40 diesel turbos costs $33---$5.50 per qt

Sooo, the JD is the cheapest. Now what?

I would not buy it regardless of which sticker is correct. You can get Mobil One 5W40 Diesel synthetic or Mobil Delvac One 5W40 Diesel synthetic. They are both exactly the same formula just different packaging. I would get the Mobil so you get the same product year after year from the leader/best, and its FULLY synthetic, no doubt. John deere may get the oil from one company this year and the contract go to another off the wall company next year. Tom

Actually, AMSOIL was the first to produce synthetic oil for the automobile (10W-40) in 1972 (synthetic oil was being used in aircraft up to that point). Mobil 1 didn"t come out until the early eighties, and although Mobil 1 is no doubt a good oil, Amsoil is better. They have oils guaranteed to 25k and 35k miles. Mobil 1 is just cracking the 10 to 15k range because they just don"t have the additive package that Amsoil has.

You are wright abouth the mobil1, I have used it for many years now, everthing i have has mobil1 in it. It came on the market in 1976. No one had synthetic lube oil for many years after that.

Actually I think Amsoil was the first full synthetic oil. Mobil is good oil too.

This is from my earlier post on Amsoil Guido. AMSOIL was the first to produce synthetic oil for the automobile (10W-40) in 1972 (synthetic oil was being used in aircraft up to that point). If you need any specific info on any of their oils, just email me.
