Hey everybody. I apologize this is off topic, but being cooped up inside for the last three days means I need to resort to something to do.

Anyways, I've found plans for a gun cabinet that I think would be neat to build. We could use a better place to store firearms. Trouble is, we've been juggling around the idea of an actual gun safe. That would solve our storage problem, but then I'm out of something to do. Here's where your opinion comes in...

I could build the bottom part of the cabinet, then wait and see what the call is on a safe, and proceed from there.

I would have to modify the design a bit. We have several long guns, so the right hand shelves probably would be converted to more long gun racks. Or possibly racks on either side, with a set of shelves right down the middle?

But then if we get a safe anyways, I could just make the top racks all shelves and have a really nice book case or shelving.

Thanks, and I apologize for the OT post. If there's a better spot you can direct me to, that would be great also.

Kevin

I just bought a 16 gun safe from Dick's Sporting Goods for $299. I have it in a closet bolted to the wall. It's the largest safe to fit tightly in the closet (a small safe actually) and would take some effort to pry out. No room to work. (Anything can be stolen if given enough time). Heck I think the old fashioned furniture cabinets are illegal in some states now days.

Other safes are much heavier but I think it was a good deal and serves it's purpose.

Out of sight, out of mind. Know a fella gonna make one that looks like a grandfather clock. NRA promises to replace stolen guns, even if you don/t have serial numbers. Don't know if they will though. Have to keep your membership up for sure.

First of all, guns are like other tools on a farm. Necessary for certain jobs. No need to apologize for "off topic."

Well, it looks like a nice project - how about adding a few shelves, lights and giving it to your wife for a china/curio cabinet?

As far as guns, in today's society, last thing you want to do is put them on display in your living room in a easily breached cabinet. Too many folks are out there who will be casing your place, looking for your valuables. You can't afford to have your guns stolen and end up in the wrong hands. Not only is there the obvious $ loss, but there are liability issues - the way juries and lawyers look for scape goats today. Then what if someone were to be injured or killed with one of your stolen guns? Wouldn't that bother you the rest of your life? Your best option is a locked gunsafe, hidden away where it isn't obvious to the burgler who's doing a fast grab & get. Gun safes range from $100 on up, and you get the security that you pay for. Better the safe, longer it will take for them to get into it - more likely they are to give up and go elsewhere. If you have some special guns with sentimental value, like grandpa's old double barrel, etc, this becomes even more important, because such items are irrepacible.

I plan on going with a safe when the time comes. Don't feel comfortable with guns out in the open these days...

Thank you all for your help. Sounds like we will invest in a safe, and I will modify these plans into shelves. Thanks again, this site is great!

I have ran a Proffesional Woodshop in my past and have constructed more than several "Oak Gun Cabinets" for People. My two Uncles have had thier Home entered and all thier fire Arms Stolen because they were loose mouthed and bragged of their "real Nice Gun Cabinet". My son claims no one knew of his Cabinet I built for him but he caught the two thieves red handed with the whole Cabinet,Guns and all coming down the Porch Steps with their Van backed up to the Porch ready to be loaded. His friend was with him and needless to say there was some serious A$$ kicking going on when the Deputy who he called arrived. My advise: Buy a Steel Bolt Down Cabinet with a double Padlock secure system attached[not a Combo Lock] and do not have the Padlocks keyed alike.Master Bolt Cutter proof Locksets would be my choice. Funnel your Creative Ambitions into Curio Cabinets or enclosed Book Cases etc. You will be much happier.

For years I wanted a good dispay cabinet for our guns. Looked at all kinds of plans, wood, etc.
Several years ago my son and I looked at the number of guns we had, the value, and the age of my grandkids. Times as they are, with all the PC Police etc. We decided to go with a safe. Haven't regretted the deceision.

Leave out a few very low end guns easy to see for the break in's and place the good stuff way out of sight. Be suprised how the word gets around in the smaller areas about a nice gun rack full of rifes. I leave my NRA stickers off the vehicles. The stickers say's pick me first for a free weapon. Sorry age we are in now with drugs and family members taking guns for cash.

I have a cabinet similar to that. I finally bought a steel fire resistant gun safe. $600.00 for a decent size one. Maybe holds 30 guns ? I figured about the price of loosing 1 gun you can have a safe. I have it upstairs above water line and bolted to the floor. They do make some now that will handle 2 feet of water. I had my basement get water in it once and had to take apart all my guns and clean and dry them. water was about 2" up on the stocks. Too much crime and fires for a nice display cabinet. I am thinking of adding shelves to my old one ? let the wife put her junk in it.

If you keep it in the basement, don't bolt it to the floor. If a water pipe breaks, or your basement otherwise gets flooded, you'll have big problems. Raise it a foot or so off the floor, and bolt it to the wall instead. Or pour a concrete "step" and bolt it to that.

Speaking of gun safes, I would like to have one in the basement, but don't think I could get one down there. I was thinking of cutting the parts and welding it together in the basement.

I have my dads very first gun cabinet. He built it by hand back when he was just in his early 20"s. He"s 74 now. Made all out of some old, old, fir. 3 glass windows in the door, and also has the ammo top. He was given a new fancy one for christmas one year, he was gonna toss this one or give it away, I couldnt see it going so it now resides in my home and my 8 year old wants it some day. He has his bb gun in it now, but I have the key.

I have been thinking of this for a long time. I have a Homak gun cabinet, sheet steel. Basically useless except it keeps my 6 year old boy out of the guns. I recommend making a hidden safe in a closet, that cant be found. If a thief cant find it then they cant steal it. I have thoughts of making a hidden wall in my closet and putting guns in it. The big heavy duty gun safes look cool but are expensive and are capable of being stolen unless it is concreted in your basement floor.

I like the idea of a safe. And a good one at that, bolted to the floor.

Build a bookcase with your energy.

Have a shop saw the plywood for you and figure the rest out. Make it 48 inches wide, which is the width of a sheet of plywood and use somehting like cherry or walnut if you can. If you can find an Amish or other cabinet shop you can have them make the doors for you or better yet have them saw everything and you just assemble.

It's not "just" assemble since 90% of any cabinet job should be in the sanding, finishing and attention to detail.

I have built a number of these and they make great winter projects.

find something else to do and buy a gun safe. The old wood gun cabinets are a thing of the past. Too easy to smash and grab the guns. I didnt look at your link so i have no idea what it was. My dial up and old computer dont like pdf files.

I would recommend a safe.

Back in the early 60's we went to the grocery store for an hour and when we came back the garage door and the doors of the house were standing wide open. The thieves took a TV and the guns out of a cabinet that looked similar to the one in your plans. Those cabinets look nice but are not very practical.
