Engie is free and can be turned over by hand. Engine also looks like it has been rebuilt not long ago since the orange paint on it is still in very good shape. Brakes even work if you pump them 2 or 3 times. Tires still hold air. Has 3 on the tree, sure hope I still remember how to drive a 3 on the tree. Over all not to bad a truck for its year. Little or no rust on the body. Should make my son a good project plus give him a nice truck to drive once we get it up and running again

OLD - Yup-That came with a 216 but it is not hard to replace it with a 235. The 235 really was a better engine as they had full pressure oil systems Someone may have already done that for you. That is what I did with my "51. Still have the truck but haven"t driven it in years. It was my dad"s first truck. If my memory serve me correctly, the "50 did not have the vent windows. I think "51 was the first year for that design and also "51 was the last year for the pull-down door handle. When you get her running, pay close attention to that shifter box on the steering column under the hood where the linkage goes back to the tranny. Mine was worn out and would constatnly get caught between gears or worse yet get stuck in two gears at once. Yep - when that happens the truck wont go. Then when sonny gets pi$$ed of and winds her up and lets the clutch out....well the truck won"t go but the tranny lets go. Don"t ask how I know. So if it gets stuck in two gears, raise the hood and push or pull on one of the levers and it will go back to neutral on that slider and then you can gingerly make the 3 on the tree work again. About the 12 volt conversion....That is easy and there is room in the floorboard for a small 12 volt battery. Change the lights, (don"t forget the ones in the dash) change the coil and add a ballast resister and change the generator. Leave the starter alone. It works great on 12 V. I didn"t change anything on the heater but did run it only on low speed and it worked for years that way. One more thing to think about....that drive line is what GM called a Torque Tube. There is a u-joint at the trans. but not at the rear axle. The Drive shaft is enclosed in a tube. The tranny seal always leaks and the grease runs down to the rear end so check the trans fluid once in a while. If you change to a later model trans, you will need to change the rear end as well. Good luck and have fun. Those were great trucks.

Those old chevy's are dependable and very easy to work on as others have said. Dad bought a 1954 1 1/2 ton chevy truck new. I still use it to haul my crawler, and disc. Have fun getting it back in operation. Stan

It has been a while since I have seen one and hope it is a long time til the next one, but I think I remember the lifter cover, on the side of the block, being wider or taller for a 216 vs. the 235. And the 230/250 series deleted that cover entirely. Years ago a friend had a 52 or 53 with the OHC6 Pontiac engine in it. That engine was based on the 230/250s and took the same bellhousing.

THe 216 and 245 both had wide covers (If it is a 1/2 ton it is likely a 216) the difference is in the position of the distributor, the bigger much more desirable engine had it in the middle of the block. The 216 was closer to the front. The 216 had splash lubrication of the rods, and was not rodded much, because they croak rods. The 245 series was awesome. It could have almost any other chevy six in it, so Getting an ID on it might take a posted picture. JimN

Well distubutor is about middle of the engine right hand/passengers side and sits pretty low in the engine. Has old canister oil filter on the left side of the engine and it sits high.

Does'nt the 49-50 have the "drop-doun" door handles? Did I hear that the "b" was for resale? Is it ugly enough to be affordable? I wouldn't have to trailer it too far.

Not all that ugly has a fair paint job on it and decals. Drop me an e-mail and I'll talk price on it. I do need to make a few bucks on it but we can talk about it. It does run real well and starts easy but has a weak/bad starter on it. If you can get it to turn over it starts fast and once warm starts easy even by hand. And yes the chev has the door handles you turn down to open the doors. Also has the foot starter button and vacuum wipers

Gee, you get all kind of good "stuff" You got that plus that D just recently. Those trucks are fairly easy to work on n you can still even get parts fairly easy. Its a 235 6 cylinder engine I suppose????? First thing I would do is power wash the engine compartment n drain n flush n fill all the fluids n stick a new set of points n condensor n plugs n wires n get some fresh gas n filter in her n see how bad the carb is. Id also worry about the fuel pump diaphrans leaking before you change the oil, dont wanna fill the lower end with gas grrrrr rr

Let us know and post some pics even??

JohnT wouldn't a 1950 have had the 216 engine instead of the 235?

At this time I'm not sure what it has other then a straight 6 in it. The valve cover is a good bit wider then the one on my 250 is if that helps you help me figure out what engine it is. I know the engine sure is clean and the paint on it looks like it hasn't been run much since the engine was painted. Also the paint isn't on top of old grease so its probably a pretty new rebuild

Oh forgot to say the radiator is brand new and full of anti freeze. Fuel pump looks to be new and so does the carb. Even the plug wires and cap look like there new. I plan to drop in a 12 volt battery tomorrow and see if it will fire up and go from there. I got this truck from the same guy that I got the D from but I still need to haul the D in. Some how with it snowing here today and where that D sits in all that mud I have to wait to haul it in till it either freezes real good or drys up. I think the freeze will get here first LOL. I also got a Farmall B yesterday, pay to much for it but oh well. I got it to help a friend out other wise I would never have got the B, plan to sell the B soon since I have no need for it

Yes it would be but I'll switch it to 12 volts because it will be cheaper in the long run to by parts for a 12 volt system like radio etc. You know how kids are they have to have something to listen to when driving down the road. Hes right at that age where girls are getting on his mind so he will have to have tunes and a good looking truck.

I've got a '79 Ford 1/2 ton my uncle ordered with the three on the tree. It's an awful truck transmission-too high in first and reverse. But at least none of my friends asked to borrow it as they were all scared of it. I did like it though because then your date could set right beside you.....

Date night is the ONLY excuse I can think of for owning an automatic trans. It's nice to keep your arm free, especially if it has a bench seat LOL. Good luck with the project. Mike

I'm glad you got that ol' Chevy. I have lots of memories trying to operate that foot starter in an old Chevy with a worn out emergency brake. It's a real dance to start one of those on a slope with a rick of firewood in the bed and a cantankerous old sixbanger under the hood. I would put her in neutral and hold the brake pedal with my left foot (after two or three pumps like Old said to get some braking action) then use my right foot to run the footfeed and the starter pedal at the same time. You can't learn that stuff in college!!!!
