Hi Guys.
Thanks for all the help with the head bolts on my Farmall H. Now, how to time the engine, I took number one plug out and turned the engine over until I felt the compression, I then turned the engine to the first notch on the pulley, at which time the cylinder was top dead center, both valves on cylinder one were closed, exhaust valve on two was open(this was the last cylinder that had fired)exhaust on three almost closed and intake on four just closing, the mag was pointing at number one, I then turned the engine to the second notch at which time the mag tripped, do I have it timed right ?????. Thanks again for all the help. Ken.

I dusted off the shop manual, and you are CORRECT... the first notch IS TDC... STILL haven't found out what the SECOND notch is, though!

Your timing is close but late. The impulse shold click just when the FIRST mark lines up with the pointer.

It's been a while since I've timed an "H", so correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems to me the first mark would be the advanced running timing, and the second mark would be the cranking timing.

If the FIRST mark is, indeed, the impulse "cranking timing", WHAT is the SECOND (LATER) mark for?

Gotta go grab the shop manual, and take a look!

The Mag. should fire a few degrees before top dead canter.

Not when its being started.Especially when hand cranking.Once its running the advance will set it at TDC.

JohnM,

You must mean "at cranking, the impulse will "trip" @ TDC, making the spark @ TDC for cranking. Once the engine "catches", and speeds up, the impulse drops out, and the timing ADVANCES all at once to the "running timing" of 20+ degrees BTDC (can't remember the exact "imulse lag angle"), offhand.

By the way, the SECOND mark on the pulley will be TDC.
