My wife started talking about a heated bed for the out side cat who lives in the horse tack and feed room, at night. I said no way, and I thought that was it. I found out my wife already has one on order from EBAY, no stopping it now. I tried to explain to her it doesn't get cold enough here in southern cal. Maybe where it snows. Will probaboy end up cooking the cat, or burning down the building. Does anyone use a heated cat bed where it gets cold? Here is what really gets me, it's the neighbor's cat, the wife started feeding. One good thing no mice in the feed room. Stan

Hey chief, sometimes you just gotta let the old lady have her way. Then when it doesn't work, just say I told you so.

Back when our cats slept in the pole barn we had an old water bed heater. We put that under their bed and they were warm as toast.

The problem with using any form of heating is that the animals don't grow their winter coat as thick at they may without heat. Then they are in trouble if they have to survive without the heat source (like during a power failure). It gets down to -40 here on the Canadian prairies, and we have never used any form of heat for any of the cats or other animals (only the old dog gets to sleep in the basement when it gets really cold). As long as they have good shelter from the wind, a thick blanket or stack of sacks to sleep on, and can sleep together for extra warmth, they are fine. A lot of our cats end up moving to the hay stacks on their own and make nice insulated beds in them. Never lost a cat to cold, nor had one freeze any body parts. Losing them to coyotes is a different story.

If the danged cats get cold here in Michigan, they curl up with the dog. Here's what you do though. Go out and put in a new electrical outlet, but don't hook it up to anything. Better yet, make it a GFI not hooked up,tell her it will protect the cat from getting fried if the bed gets wet. Make sure she only plugs in to that one...for the cats own good.

Cat people, their no end. The out door cats I know of do OK in Zero temps in the mid west. Know one farm that has weather seasoned cats 40 at least I can arrange to replace your cat if the night temps do it in. Spilled my coffee reading the cat bed thing. Keep the cards and letters coming! I now start my day with a smile.

We use a styrofoam box with a hole cut in one end and the cat seems to get real warm in there.

Stan, I don't know about leaving stuff like that plugged in when you're not around. Might be the safest thing in the world. I'm one of those kind of guys that don't like leaving stuff plugged in when not in the barn, tool sheds, stuff like that. And what temp triggers it? Is up to you. Not trying to scare you, but you asked the question. My answer...not leaving plugged in where I'm likely to forget or not see for a day or few. If its a barn cat, you got hay, it gets cold or cool, cat will do just fine. And besides, if the cat's sleeping in the hay, and a mouse makes the mistake, a dream come true for the cat, right? Your wife meant well though, so don't make her mad and find yourself sleepin in the barn with the cat...you in the hay, the cat in the bed.

Stray cats used to get the .22 treatment around here. Now, ever since the peta movement began, the shotgun treatment proves to be even more effective.

It's a good thing we shoot 'em, there is always a big tomcat around to get the ladies all loved up.

After I built my shop, my wife banished the house cats to the shop. She figured I wouldn't care about the occasional hairball puked out on my shop floor or workbench. Anyway, the shop and garage are both unheated, dog sleeps in the garage and the cats sleep in the shop. I bought a couple of the heated mats, but dog refused to use hers. So the cats have them both. The cats LUV the mats and stay glued to them all winter long. The mats are regulated to about 100 degrees F.

I laughed when I read this because I have the box for one sitting on the kitchen table. This is a K&H brand Deluxe Lectro-Kennel Heated Pad. Is a medium sized one. They stay at a constant 102 degrees and use 60 watts. My sister bought it for my two cats that live in the pole barn for christmas. She lives down in Texas and I am in Michigan and she couldn't bear the though that I had two cats sitting in a cold pole barn. I was a little skeptical at first but the first day I put it out there was about 2 weeks ago when it was very cold and those cats have been glued to it since! I guess they like it pretty well. Can't blame them. It will be ok. Good luck.

When I was a kid, I remember in the wintertime, early in the morning, when you opened the barn door, all the cats would be huddled together on the hay stack, they were quite warm staying together like that it seemed, even on the coldest of days. They were fed, but not too much, some would hunt others did not. It was always a nice scene on those days, the sun would shine into the barn, everything was all quiet, even the horses, and the cats would all be in the same spot looking at you, all squinty eyed just waking up. They were here before we were actually, came with the barns, and none of them were ever in the house as long as I can remember and back then we had some harsh winters. Nice to remember back to those days actually. I think one of the reasons it worked for them as there were always 4-5 around, made use of their body heat together + the hay is comfortable too. We have a few at our other place, had a sickly or malnurished scant few pass by that boarders have adopted, there is always dry food in a bowl on a shelf, mostly for the gray one that is a fantastic hunter and a real friendly one, he always brings you the days catch, they always seem to find a warm spot up there somewhere, usually on top of tractor that's just been run, but it does make you feel bad when it's 0 deg F outside, yet they're fine, just leave em some food before you lock up.

Where you are, I don't think that the cat would be too uncomfortable, unless it's got no fur, but on the other hand, seems the boss has other plans regardless !

Dream on...the mice will NEVER be all gone. It gets perty cold here but I only provide heat for our cats when we have a particularly old boy around and I get sentimental....with an emphasis on mental. Right now they are all young enough to snuggle together for heat.

Looks like if the cat sleeps in the cold you will too. You better let her have it or the cat may get your warm bed!
