I've had this F250 for six years and 110K miles. Brakes and suspension aside- it's a great truck!Thinking on keeping it a while longer but wondering what typical life for this motor is if well maintained. Any one have history to share greater than 100K miles? Thank you in advance.

why bother replacing it? You know it's little quirks already. Just maintain it IAW the service manual and fix as you go. You can do a lot of fixing for the price of a new one and you don't have to worry about the first scratch again. Sure there are trucks that are neglected and wear out at 30 k, but there are a lot more still around with 500+k on the ticker. A Uhaul with almost 200k on it is testimony enough for Ford quality.

Good Luck,

Dave

In October, 2005, the torque converter had just started slipping in my Ford van and I knew things would go downhill from there. Thank God my local Ford service manager told me a remedy. Had the transmission flushed and then added one bottle of Ford Friction Modifier (the fluid used to keep the Trac-Lock differential clutches grippy, $3.99 plus tax). Trans has been trouble-free (no more slipping) from that day to this in spite of hard usage.

Father in law just got rid of his 2000 f250 4x4 v10. Had I think 210,000 of the hardest miles you can imagine, drives it like he stole it even going down the lane to the mailbox. I don't think he had any problems with that motor while he had it. He just bought a 2008 with the v10 we'll see if this one holds up as well. Good luck with yours. Mike

My dad works for At&t, he has a 1999 F450 with a V10. That thing runs a minimum of 8 hours a day M-F because he never shuts the thing off. They change the oil every 15,000mi and it has somewhere around 225,000 on it, never had a problem. Currently it burns a quart every 1500 or so.
One thing to watch out for, granted this doesn't happen that often, but, make sure you change the antifreeze every few years or add a coolant additive to it such as Fleetguard DCA. Because the block is cast iron and the heads are aluminum you can get a bad reaction going on through the antifreeze and cause holes to form in the head leading to less than pleasant results.

That antifreeze tip is also important because the vanes on the water pump will also errode if the antifreeze isn't changed.

Is it diesel or gas? Automatic or Manual. I worked for a autosupplier in the 90's that made a key component for the automatic trans and that trans is junk, worst warranty of all 5 automatics in that day. The Ford Sharonville plant in the Cincinnati area is run by idiots....yes total idiots. That plant makes the automatic trans for the F series trucks. As far as the Diesel motor goes.--- Very good friend works for Ford (engine dept in dearborn Mi.) and the Diesel is made by International, which I am sure you know and the Warranty cost is killing Ford to the tune of $1 billion/year because of fuel rail problems, turbos, etc. I had a 1992 F-150 I sold it for $700 at 110,000 miles due to rust and I didnt need it anymore. Overall a good truck but the inside was cheap and needed some beef to it. 5 speed manual worked great in it and was great in all weather.

I ran a Ford E-350 van w/v10 for 225K. No problems with motor. I also kept the oil changed every 3000. I now have a 2001 F-250 crewcab w/v10 and 90k.

Used a U-Haul a year ago with 185,000 or so on it. Based on the body condition, I am surprised if it even got an oil change. It looked like kids had done a bondo job on the drivers door, and painted it with a brush. No idea if it had engine work or not, but I was impressed! Great power, decent mileage, ran excellent.

My son-in-law has an Excursion with almost 150K miles on it. No problems with the motor(He takes real good care of his stuff) but the torque converter is slipping some and that makes the trans go in and out of overdrive.
