OK, I know this has been cussed and discussed before, and I have read quite a bit of the archives, but I"m going to ask again. I"m looking at a "04 F-350 with 6.0 power stroke. Head gaskets have recently been replaced. Do they blow often, or were the factory installed gaskets faulty and a changeout fixes the problem? Any other things I should be looking for. I realize that many believe that the 7.3 is a better engine, but anything with that engine around here has a million miles and has been rode hard and put away wet. Probably a good testimony to the 7.3"s durability, but my banker doesn"t see the value. Also, what is the website that I remember being mentioned so often that specializes in diesel engines? Would like to go over there and do some research as to some practical modifications to exhaust and intake flow to improve power and especially mileage. Your constructive comments would be helpful.

I have a 2005 F350 with the 6.0 in it. So far so good. But, only 58k on it so far. Every, I mean EVERY vehicle, engine, boat, train, tractor, has a group of people who knew somebody whose barbers, neighbors, kid's teacher had one that was a disaster.

well seems ford is still trying to get as much $$$ as possible they had a durable engine with the 7.3 but had to change things around to the 60 now they have a 6.4 they plan on using if they went back to the 7.3 and found a better tranny than that non user friendly ZF 6 speed they would have many more satisfied customers. My boss has always been a die hard Ford man but he bought 5 GMC in 05&06 and everyone seems to love them only problems have been recalls or warranty related.and these guys load them to the hilt and have 7 guys in the 4 door cab

fordtruckforum.com and oilburners.net are two good sites for info on diesel trucks. The Ford forum has boards for each model diesel motor, lots of good info there.
I have a 93 F350 7.3 IDI with 220k.Great truck parts are cheap, plentiful and there is almost no electronics on the engine so it is easy to work on.

I bought a 93" 350 new w/a 7.3 diesel. Have only 175,000 miles on it. Had to have a new slave cylinder on the clutch and a rear seal on the rear end. I pull a 28" goose neck trailer hauling 2, sometimes 3 small tractors on it. Have made several round trips to IA,OH, and MI in the truck pulling the trailer. Only bad thing about that model of engine is the injector pump is not made any more, have to have the pump rebuilt at around $500.
For Ford diesel motor info, look at the site Intellidog.com. Have found a lot of info from that guy. HTH

This site and the dieselstop.stoopid are great places to find all kinds of misinformation.

Those on thedieselstop.stewpid are mainly a bunch of wanna bee truck drivers, high school kids dreaming of their first 'truck', and absolute morons who have 'chipped' or modified their pickup, destroyed the engine, and now are crying that Ford WILL NOT warranty the damage. The site not only encourages the use of performance chips, but tells the user how to remove the chip, and hide the evidence of the chip having ever been installed.
And YES, I do know how to spell stupid.

I have a 03 F350 crewcab with 47000 miles,I've heard the horror stories. I haven't had any trouble and pull a 28 ft trailer. My serial number fell after the early ones that had the most trouble. My son had a 04 F250 and the only trouble he had was the oil cooler, he had more miles than mine and traded for a 08

I have a 2006 F-350 with the 6.0 Powerstroke in it. So far so good with it at 47,000 hard miles. I have not heard of there being major problems with the head gaskets in these motors. I would also have to say that the 7.3 is a better motor but like you said if you find one you are lucky to find one that has not been ragged out. I pull a 25' tri-axle gooseneck with my 6.0...no problem.

The 6.0 is junk, and that is a constructive comment. I know three peop;e whom had them bought back by ford because they had soooo many problems turbos, head gaskets, coolant blowing out of the overflow, oil leaks, rear main seals.etc etc etc. Look for a cummins or a duramax.

Could be true. Dad has a Duramax with the Allison transmission. That old gal will get up and haul. But there are folks out there that will say that the Duramax is junk also. I imagine that the worst problems were in the first couple years that these engines came out. Same with Dodge's auto transmissions. Like other's have said before, sure would be nice to have the choice of a Cummins married up to the Allison. The Duramax must be working out fairly well for those who have them as I have found very few used units. Hopefully most of the bugs have been worked out of the 6.0. Guess time will tell.
