I have heard of, and read about Allis Chalmers making industrial building componets, such as pumps and electrical motors and switch gear, and I belive breaker boxes, but maybe not. Well, today I found my first Allis Chalmers electrical motor. It is the idler motor of a old three phase convertor i bought at auction this summer. Didnt even know what I had untill I was looking for some capacitors earlier today for another project. Just thought i would share my latest find. Anyone else have any of these? Mine is a three phase 5 horse, 208, 230, 440 volt.

I used to haul water years ago from the Hamilton, Ohio north water plant. They have those motors and they were over a 1000 hp. They are old but they still use them.
I dont know if they will let you look at them any more. You can't get water from there anymore, and security is a thing now at water plants.

I started my machinist apprenticeship in the old
CB&Q Railroad Roundhouse, in LaCrosse, Wisconsin,
about 45 years ago. All of the machinery-Lathes,
Drill Presses, etc. had Allis Chalmers Motors.
They were all big heavy Cast iron frame Motors,
from when things were built to a standard of
quality and pride, versis now when things are
built to sell for a cheap price.
The Turbines at Hoover Dam are Allis Chalmers!

Allis Chalmers made high &low pressure steam turbines. I was on the Halsey CG23 that had those turbines on it for main engines with a 1200lb steam system (Foster-Wheeler Boilers). They also made an experimental nuclear reactor that was at the NSP Plant near Sioux Falls (Pathfinder) I was in the plant while it was in operation in the late 1960's.

AC has made a wide variety of electrical and electronic systems. My brother rebuilds them (and many others) for a living. The first ones I noticed were on carnival rides. JimN

The lift motor at the Sundan underground mine at Tower, Mn. was built by Allis Chalmers. I forgot the HP , but it is a large one. May be 500??? Has anyone else seen it?

Yes By gum it is. Located in the tipple house up top, along with some other museum quality machinary. I even trusted that AC to get me down and back with no thought of questioning its ability. JimN
