Here we go again. In Los Angeles there is talk of banning fireplaces being used during certin days in the winter. Regional Air Regulators (tree huggers) will decide what days fire places can't be used depending on air quality. If they get their way all califoirnia will have the same regulations. Then watch out, all states east of calif. I will have a problem,(no I wouln't) as all my heat is from my wood stove. Have fun. Stan

Stan, I had read about that, but understood that CA dropped the idea to reconsider at a later date. This must be the later date. I know that a suburb west of Chicago, forgot its name now just brought up the same thing a couple of weeks ago. Some guy named Dubinski or something like that, that lead the charge in Illinois going smokeless in all public places the first of this year. I understand that he's offended by chimney smoke when he's down wind of it. Guys like that had better watch it...can't chop fire wood with the ol' double bit and hate to see it rusting away in the corner, so gotta chop something...

I'd heard years ago that parts of CA actually put water meters on private wells and bill accordingly. Is that true?

Well beyond time to take back America.

The Greater Salt Lake, UT area has regular burning bans during the winter due to an inversion layer. LA is not alone with its air quality problem. And you can't blame this on tree huggers, everyone is concerned about air quality.

These rules have been in effect for longer than about 10 years in some areas. Phoenix & Chicago come to mind right off the top. News flashes on radio & message boards on the highways."Air Quality Alert, No Wood Stoves or Fireplaces Today". Radio flashes also said "No Lawn Mowing until After 6 PM". I'm no tree hugger, but have seen the brown haze over the L.A. area, could taste the air all the way out past San Bernadino, so SOME restrictions , during SOME times are needed. For a real shock, next time you go through El Paso, look across the river to Juarez, where there are no rules.
As a side-note. In MN we used to have pollution test on cars, only in the 7 county Mpls-St Paul area. After a few years, cars less than 5 years old were exempted, rate of failure was so small that the Feds okayed this. Then the failure rate for older cars also dropped enough that the inspection program was closed down completely sometime around 7 or 8 years ago.

I believe Denver has had restrictions on wood-burning stoves for many years. It isn't just SoCal that has air pollution problems.

We lived in Riverside, probably 50 years ago now...at that time, there were days-lots of days-you could practically cut the air-in Riverside-with a knife. If you drove up to Arrowhead, it looked like the whole valley was covered in fog, but it was smog-the air everyone lived in and breathed. Smog was getting to be a problem in Banning and Beaumont, out in the pass, and getting down into Palm Springs.
There're millions more people there now; I assume it's solid housing all the way from LA proper to Riverside and beyond. As the world fills up with more and more people, jammed together in places like LA, there'll be more and more of this.
