My 1978 yanmar 330D (total 1500 hours) has a lazy lift capabilty. Stick the bucket into a pile of gravel and it's lazy about lifting it. A friend says the system needs increased pressure, to turn the screw on top of the spring a 1/4 turn at the hyd control and see if that helps. Well the cover is like very smooth surface, not hex headed and no way to get at the screw adjustment. Like it's preset for tension/pressure. any ideas??

Best thing to do is to hook it up to a flowmeter, after making sure that the relief valve is OK. You will also need to have the original specs for comparison.

Hydraulic

How good of an idea is it to increase the pressure without knowing the exisiting system pressure and the pressure after adjustment? Breaking a loader frame, blowing a hose or ram seal is going to drop the load onto something valuable or a person. Odds are those hoses are 30 years old and are about ready to fail under normal working pressure. Making the tractor unstable with too much weight over the front and not enough on the back is dangerous as well. Gravel is very heavy, odds are 1/3 to 1/2 bucket is lots.

Pressure equals lifting power.
GPM, Gallons per minute, volume, equals lift speed

stick a pressure gauge onto one of the laoder feed lines and deadhead it.. see what pressure you are making.

Have you cleaned the hyd fluid strainer?

Actually twice. The system designed where trans fluid and Hyd fluid are common. The on board mesh screen is located at the bottom of trans mission. Dirt cleaned off, fluid changed in previous sessions. Empty bucket works great but when loaded, sluggish. Must be Flow rate. The guy who suggested the control adjustment, started selling these and Kubotas in the mid seventies. I'll go back to him. thanks,

Could be a restriction in a hose.

By lazy if you mean slow increasing the pressure will not help. Flow (gallons per minutes) determines how fast the bucket will move. Also remember a leaking relief acts just like a worn out pump.

Like there is pump, hoses, control valve, levers, and hyd cylinders. where would the releif valve be in that circuit?
thanks,
